The bunk bed isn't here yet the crib and daybed will go I will get a fresh room to start with. Just wanted to show pictures of the room

Search on line for children’s bedrooms with bunk beds and you’ll see lots of ideas. The more gender neutral the better.

How old are the kids ? For me I would not make it easy for this to happen. But the age of the kids is important.

With bunkbeds along one wall there should be wall space for each child to have a table or cozy spot. Paint neutral ocean theme color in aqua or blue and use bed pillows and stuffies to relate to their shark/mermaid interests. An ocean theme rug for the common space in the floor. Kids change interests all the time so don’t get too invested. I would not put bunkbeds in a kids room because they are impossible to make. Make sure the ones you are getting can be converted to twin beds.

I suggest the same duvet cover or coverlet for both boy and girl, and they can each have the twin bed sheets sets with the shark and mermaid themes. Open the navy curtains and install opaque roman shades on the windows. You can also find some framed wall art with their themes. Something like this...

Making the beds is really a pain when it comes to bunkbeds.

As mentioned by HU-121436380, I also think that twin beds would be better than bunk beds. but 1) it sounded like a wood bunk bed is already ordered, 2) we don't know the age of the children, and 3) we need a floor plan in order to determine possibilities other than bunk beds.

Ditto bunk bed problems, which my grandkids had. I know hey are popular, maybe seem to free up space, but what a pain, & never look neat like inspo pics, & even harder to train a kid to make the bed. ( always hard! But more possible with a simple twin bed & single fitted sheet & a comforter.

My DD is currently in process of adding a BR so can separate 8 & 6 y/o boy & girl now having a room to share a room. So I agree, if one child has a room not using, I might not make a big investment to double them up. I can certainly see having to try to do some gradual shifting around to get to goal of using their own rooms for sleeping.
Sleeping patterns can be really hard to change.

Blue is a great color for all kids and you have a head start.

If we do not get answers o questions there is no way to help. The upper bunk is IMO a bad choice unless the kids are older since that can be a huge area open to disaster . Since I see a crib I assume one child is not very old so kids are monkeys they will climb any time they have achance and a fall from that top bunk could be devastating. I agree twin beds are best and until you post a floor plan and more info IMO you have answers . This layout often works well. Sleep [atterens are a must to develope early and honestly boys and girls sahring a bedroom does not work well most of the time so IMO do not do anything too permanent

Thank you all so so much for your advice. So unfortunately I bought the bunk beds already since they were obsessing over it. My daughter is 6 and son is 4 I might keep it simple and just decorate with pillows, sheets, small decorative prices on walls.

Get fun bedding and pillows. Unfortunately, at that age, kids taste change all the time! Sharks, dinosaurs, soccer etc; mermaids, ballerinas, horses, basketball etc. Make it easy on yourself to be able to change. A pretty blue paint on the walls ( not too bright ) would be a great backdrop for that. The stickers for the wall is a great idea as well!

Then get them to make some nice artwork and craft projects to decorate their room.

It will be fun an personal to them.

We are bunk bed fans in our house! The only downside is that it is a PITA to make the top bunk, but we eventually solved that problem (for me...) by having the kid get big enough to make it.

We moved our kids into it at 3 and 6 (coming out of a crib and toddler bed). They are now 10 and 13. We did have strict rules about the top bunk: you had to be six to go up, and no more than one person could be up there at a time.

The room was already painted sky blue when we did the bunks, so we let each kid choose a couple of themes they were interested in and then wove them together. What we ended up with was sea life for the lower bunk and outer space for the top bunk. We got decals for the walls and got themed sheets and bedding for each kid (Land of Nod, which is now Crate&kids, though isn't quite as great as it once was—lots of other places that sell themed sets too though). This tied the room together because the quilts and decals were the same style, just different themes, and also helped me keep straight whose bedding was whose. We are just now taking the decals down and starting to think about repainting/redesigning the room for teens. Our particular room is 10' x 12' so doesn't really have room to unbunk the beds without taking up precious floor space unless we go to loft beds. The bunk beds we have are high quality frames that can someday be set up separately, though, so I'm not itching to replace them.

Another option to consider if this may be a temporary share is a bed with a trundle. There are some nice ones that can tuck away in the future and be handy for guests or sleepovers if they end up back in their own rooms.

That is a bit different than what I thought . I agree let thrm choose bedding for each and maybe even one wall each for decals which are great for the many times those fave things will change . I bet the girl will move back to her own room soon

SInce kids grow fast, I'd make sure any decor is easily changed.

I'd make a ritual of something to help daughter sleep. Reading a book, listening to music. My daughter struggled to sleep and I had a cheesy disco light that spun with different colors. It gave her something to look at while lying in bed.

Have her pick out the bedding for her new bed. You can choose some options, so when you ask her, you give her a choice of things you like, rather than letting her pick anything. It will still feel like hers if she picks from a limited set of choices, rather than the whole store.
