Comments (22)Yes! Reducing stress is a part of a healthy lifestyle! Good for you, Springroz! I hope to get some of my stress under control ... just extended an offer to a person to fill one of my team roles. That should help. I also try to start the day before 5am and that helps soooo much. I get so much done in the quiet of the early morning. I am doing fairly well with eating this week and good but not great with my water consumption. I have NOT gotten outside and active 3x this week. Not even once. I woke up this morning and got dressed for an early walk-- and was bummed to discover it is raining pretty heavily. It is still dark out so maybe it will stop or slow soon. (edited to add that I checked the weather and it is going to continue all day.. boo. I will see if there is a lull later this morning ... if not, maybe I will jump rope on the covered patio) I did indulge last night-- I got my BIL 60 fancy pance burgers for his 60th birthday. I gave him a "burger comparison" kit from the same company for christmas last year and this year I did the same again for all of my siblings. I knew he (and his whole family) love them ... also knew his favorite was the dry aged beef so I ordered them as well as a new blend of brisket and short rib. Last night they had me over for cocktails and burgers (I've been sending them as gifts for 2 yr but never had one for myself!). We had the brisket and short rib burger with mushrooms on an onion roll. Very much a caloric splurge but omg! It was soooo good! I didnt eat prior to going over so I basically put all my calories into that burger (and salad) lol. It was so worth it. Everyone liked the short rib and brisket -- and really, it was *very* good but they all agreed that the dry aged burgers are significantly better. I will be going over next week for the dry aged version! I will have to be especially good all this week-- and maybe commit to 4 days active and outside! Aside: I have to say, the 60 burgers was a last minute gift idea ... but it was a perfect. He knew it was from me as soon as he saw the debragga box delivered lol ... but he was definitely surprised and delighted to find 60 burgers! GS .. feeling strong is a win! I have lost a lot of strength this last 10 yr and especially the last 5 yr. I am eager to get that feeling back. You and Feathers are inspiring! A workout at lunch? It sounds so refreshing! How was your week? Pretty sure I haven't lost weight but I feel good about making better choices (even with the indulgent burger last night!)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/18/2024
Comments (21)Annie, I'm so happy that 5:2 intermittent fasting has worked for you! It's been a wonder for me too! I've found it helpful for digestive issues as well. (I am gluten intolerant, very sensitive, probably celiac.) On fasting day I also enjoy sparkling water (La Croix, Bubly, Waterloo) as a little treat that wont't break the fast. I'm continuing with 5:2 intermittent fasting. I have been pretty consistent about doing some 36 hour fasts on some of those 2 fasting days. It's not easy, but it's easier than one would think. With my gluten intolerance I find cooking and eating at home to be a much better option since there are few restaurants that I feel confident I won't risk getting sick from cross-contamination. I am so happy that I finally upgraded from an electric radiant stove to an induction GE Cafe range with double oven. The responsiveness and speed at which pans heat up makes it so much more pleasant to cook. I know it's carb-heavy but I finally tried making some butternut squash risotto over the weekend and it was delicious and quite fun to cook. I'm loving the double oven too. It's helping revive my joy in cooking. My garden veggies are doing better so I'm enjoying fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and eggplant. Weirdly my crookneck summer squash isn't producing much but what it has was delicious. In terms of exercise I really pushed myself over the weekend. Last day of swimming at the 50m pool within walking distance of my house so I swam 2 hours!! on Saturday. Then Sunday I went for 1hour + 20min run all the way up to a park, through part of a trail system, back up hill, then back down home. I've also been able to keep with my morning swimming this week at another (sadly 25m) pool and running on the other days. I have been reluctant to lift weights since my left arm is still bothering me. I have another massage appointment next week that I hope will help. But my massage therapist is trying to sell her house and move away! In terms of non-scale victories, I wore a crop top for the first time in probably two decades! It was just on a hike with a friend, but I decided to brave it. I've dropped weight since last winter and finally felt bold enough to try the look....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/1/2024
Comments (36)Funky, i had registered long ago with my name andwhatever was required. i used my name until houzz, without my knowledge changedme to this number. i had absolutely nothing to do wth this deleting my name and changing it to a number. after my name was changed to a number, on the very few posts i have made, i have often sgned my name as westy, aka westsider40. With all due respect to your longstanding participation and helpful attitude, the fact that complex carbs turn into sugar is neither snark nor misinformation. From a weight loss pov, complex carbs turn into sugar. ”If you want to swoop in and share misinformation and snark, there are plenty of other places on the internet to do so.” You said this to me specifically. doesnt make me feel very good. westsider40, aka westy aka 86…...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 10/20/2024
Comments (18)Lego your walk/hike looks beautiful! Last week was a bit of a mess with several days of company events that had me away from home for 12+ hours every day. I know this isn't about health exactly, but I had to do my first big presentation in front of the whole company and I absolutely nailed it! I felt confident in my appearance (thanks to refocusing on health in the last few years) and relatively new clothes. All I had to focus on was my content and delivery and thanks to a recent public speaking workshop it went so well. I received a ton of positive feedback and it felt like such an accomplishment for an introvert like myself. This week I'm refocusing on exercise though I've felt rather run down. My husband has had the flu and I am so happy to say that I didn't get sick like he did. I think maybe I've been fighting it off and that's why I've felt run down. I think my new digestive health (thanks to a great doctor's help) has really turned around how frequently I get sick, even when exposed to illnesses. I still managed my long 1.75 hour run on Sunday and my normal weekday morning exercise (1 hour swim + 25min dog walk or 30-45min run + 25min dog walk). Still haven't gotten back to weight lifting, but keep hoping I will. I never really even have time for a lunch break when I might fit in the lifting. On the eating front I'm still doing IF and trying to eat relatively healthy. But I think I've been stressed out with being so busy at work and haven't been cooking as much as I would like. Have picked up takeout a bit more than normal and I really want to get back on track with cooking. As busy as I have been at work, it's been a challenge to find time for necessary doctor appointments. I finally squeezed one in on Wednesday morning and found myself answering work questions on my phone while I was waiting for the doctor. It just never ends. And of course at that doctor appointment, the doctor was reminding me of two additional prevantative care exams I need to do at my age that I will have to find yet another doctor (or two) and somehow fit in. It's overwhelming. I'm trying to just handle one thing at a time but it feels like a busy job just doesn't leave a lot of room for taking care of oneself....See MoreRelated Professionals
