Need help with BM Classic Gray color scheme...
Comments (3)That is a good point. I didn't mention décor details, because the house will be sold this year, and I am trying to go for a neutral look that would appeal to many buyers. Of course I want to like it too, while still living here. I love gray, which happens to be a popular choice, so I am happy playing with shades of gray. But I would welcome any suggestions for other colors that harmonize with gray on adjacent walls. Here are some pieces of furniture that I have: Dining room table - Flatiron from RH (still looking for chairs, I want mismatched chairs to go with it, some weathered wood, some painted): Breakfast nook: white pedestal tableChairs are like these, but bluish/green - no longer sold at PB, so can't find photo: Red cabinet in living room: Family room: Finish on the console is espresso elm: RH English roll arm sofa, color is charcoal: Sold the old coffee table, haven't chosen a new one yet. There is also white built-in shelving in the family room, and a red-white-gray brick fireplace, similar this one: The floors are your standard 90s yellow finish oak, I plan to refinish them to weathered oak or a driftwood-like finish (so that all orange/yellow is gone). Carpet is this (color is "Platinum Mist" - gray): I hope this helps. Thank you again for your time and advice....See MoreBM Darken Classic Gray paint
Comments (33)I have a post and beam renovation getting ready for paint... in my open concept kitchen/dining/living I have Chantilly Lace on the ceiling, walls and trim in different finishes. I am using Classic Gray down the hall and in the bedrooms. The ceiling throughout is tongue and groove with support beams running through. I need a slightly darker version of Classic Gray that can be used consistently on the ceiling beams, to provide contrast. It needs to be dark enough to contrast from the Classic Gray on the bedroom walls, but not so dark that it overwhelms the open concept area. The color tone of Classic Grey is perfect, but I think I need more depth. Advice?...See MoreBM Classic Grey - is it too beige/greige?
Comments (14)I think it looks fine. I have whole foyer and first floor painted in BM Balboa Mist and I love it. It’s a little more griege that the classic grey, so maybe that’s why it looks cool to me, but if you are looking for grey and not greige, then it totally works. I think it looks great with your cabinets and the floors! This article is really good at parsing up the greys and their pros and cons. Classic grey is in there...just thought I would share in case it helps. https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/the-9-best-benjamin-moore-paint-colors-grays-including-undertones/...See MoreBM classic gray walls with steam trim?
Comments (10)More superficially regarding value, how is it different from LRV? Excellent question. LRV is a quantity. It tells you how much light a color reflects. The LRV number is a proportion. For example, Steam has a LRV of 86, that tells you that it reflects 86% of the light that hits it and absorbs the rest. Value is a visual judgement of how light or dark a color looks. We make that judgment against e a Value scale, some people call it a grayscale. So, LRV is a quantity of light reflectance and Value is a judgement of how light or dark a color looks/feels. When you have the help of hue, value, chroma and LRV that describes paint colors for you, the visual gymnastics of guessing about undertones etc. stops. Imagine going to the store to buy a pair of shoes but there are no sizes or prices marked on the shoes or the box - absolutely no numeric information about any of the shoes. You just have to start eyeballing shoes guessing which ones will fit. And if you want to try them on to see if they fit, you have to buy the shoes. If they don't fit, oh well. You just have to keep buying more and trying them on. Over and over until you find a pair that works. That's what's happening when people eyeball paint chips, buy sample pots, and paint boards. It's all just guessing and hoping --- and spending money and time until you find a color that works. Color notations - which are numeric descriptions of paint colors - save a lot of people a lot of money and time....See MoreRelated Professionals
