Keeping quartzite, replacing cabinets

We’re finishing a long remodel & realized we bought the wrong cabinets. We let ourselves be talked into Waypoint cabinets that are terrible quality. I’m trying to get all of our issues fixed but facing the possibility we need to replace them with something else.

We have a beautiful leathered Tahiti quartzite countertop sitting on these perimeter cabinets.

Can we replace the cabinets without damaging the countertops?

The experts who can give you the best evaluation will be the people who did the countertop installation. They would be my firs choice to do the removal and replacement.

Taj is very fissured, and brittle. It's finicky and temperamental. It doesn't take moving well once installed. So not easily, or cheaply, moved, no. You will pay almost as much as new counters for a service like that. There is no upside to free risk like that to any contractor.

Well, it is hard to say. Do the old ones really need fixing or is that just how they work as they are 10 years old? How much would it cost to fix them if you can even find replacement parts for them? Is the Maytag Epic reliable? Have you looked for reviews on Maytag Epics? You said you have to leave them behind if you sell the house. Is that required by law where you are? Everyone I know who has moved has always taken their appliances with them unless they were moving into a house with a better appliance than what they already have. If the sale of their house was contingent on it having appliances they just went out an bought used ones or ones from rehab outlets and left those behind. I got my FL as an anniversary gift so if anyone thinks its going to be left behind if I move, they are totally delusional. I'll replace it with something else if I have to, but my machine goes with me. Are you planning on being there long? If not, you might as well keep the old ones and only worry about replacing if it is really needed. Or you can put the new ones in, put the old ones in storage and when you move take the new ones and just put the old ones back. If I remember correctly, the average life span of a FL is about 10 years, but sometimes you get that diamond in the rough that just keeps going. I'm fairly certain that a newer machine, depending on the one you get, would probably clean better than what is there now. It could depend on what detergent you are using too and what stains aren't coming out. The scorching in the drier is definitely a prob as I still have my old TL drier and it isn't scortching any of my clothes, so that definitely needs to be fixed or replaced. Lord knows how much that may cost to fix too, if it can be fixed. I'm hoping some of the questions I posed helped. Unfortunately it is the best I can do to assist you. I use something until it wears out. Depending on my finacial situation at the time, I'll fix said item if that is all I can afford. If it keeps breaking down then I save up to replace it, but your situation is unique as you have to leave them if you move.

Maybe. But I wouldn't count on it. Yes, stone tops are removed everyday when they're done wrong so they can be recut, but the silicone's barely set when that happens. And, who knows what adhesive the installers used on yours, or where there might e hidden veins that would crack, or even if you'll keep your exact same layout? (Wouldn't you love the opportunity to tweak that?) Sorry, but when you put granite tops in a kitchen, you should first be sure the bones are worth putting flesh on. You can't put a pig in a prom dress and later change her out to a cheerleader.

I would remove the light box and replace with pendants. Is the downdraft working for you? Decent hoods are expensive to install. I'm all about function so I am putting a lot of attention into the hood in my kitchen, but it depends on how you cook. Lovely space to work with :) .

The tile itself is no problem...the INSTALLATION is poor! Sorry to say but the tile has been installed without knowledge of the product. To be clear, these large format tiles (any tile that has a single side that is LONGER than 15") requires a 1/3 "off-set" (this is a technical requirement for tiles that have an edge LONGER than 18"). Your tile not only has NO 1/3 off-set, it also has "H" joints that are a "No-No" in the wood flooring industry (when laying wood-look tiles you want to have a look that is as close to the mimic of wood install as possible). The "H" joints in a tile floor is not a big deal, technically, but it ruins the effect of a wood look tile trying to mimic a hardwood. These two things put together would irritate me....but then again I'm a flooring professional who wandered around the Sistine Chapel staring at the FLOORS (beautiful tile and glass mosaic for those of you who were too busy looking at the ceiling). As for the over all presentation of the kitchen, I'm not a fan of dark. That being said the colours chosen are fine but a gray/white tile would have been MUCH better because of the counter top colour. It is too bad the tile was discontinued by the time you purchased. Good luck. If you feel the need to change the flooring to white/gray your kitchen would do VERY WELL with it.

It can be done. No one will assume breakage risk. Not a big deal if it breaks.

What’s the issue with the quality? We had cabinets in our first remodel, where the issue was only with the doors - some were warping. (That cabinet co., later out of business!). But the boxes were fine. So in the later remodel, when we wanted to update to Shaker-style, we just replaced the doors and drawer fronts.

The quality is just really poor. These are Wayfair cabinets and the paint finish is so poor. Since install I’ve talked with other people who rep several lines of cabinets who have told me that we are going to have to fight like hell to get quality finish. Our GC and cabinet rep have both insisted the quality is good and tried to
Touch up where there are problems but it’s made it worse.

Waypoint is American Woodmark is Shenendoah is Timberlake. It is a slightly above builder grade line that has very few finishes, and a few small amount of minor customizations. You will have to spend 5-6x what those cost to get a high end Level 8-9 custom line, so there really should have been zero mistake that you were getting anything other than a Level 2 type cabinet.

My GC and cabinet rep praised these cabinets and my GC just put them in her house! They kept telling us they were fantastic value for the money and there was no need to go with a different line. Our GC just won a couple awards in the Raleigh area and has a beautiful portfolio here on Houzz with all glowing reviews. I’ve seen some of her other work in person and it’s been beautiful. Ultimately though this is our fault for being talked into them. We were doing a huge remodel with so many decisions and there was a lot of unexpected costs (outside the contingency we budged for) so we just trusted our GC and her preferred cabinet rep. Biggest regret.

I don't know about your particular countertops but when we removed the granite ones in our kitchen they all came up easily without damage and we were able to give them away. Sorry you ended up with cabinets you aren't happy with.
