Lighting and bar stool help

last month
last modified: last month

Im looking for help choosing pendant lights. This isnt my dream kitchen but i want to make it likeable and feel more like me. I dont like the pendant lighting above the tiny little breakfast bar area (I dont really know what that is called). Its not an ideal little island and i do wish it was one height but its going to stay as is for the distant future. Maybe in 10 years or so we can just remodel the whole kitchen. Anyway everything pendant light i like seems too large.

I dont know if i want to lose the light by capping them off .....Its an open floor plan so unfortunately you can see the living room and the dinning room and the kitchen all in one glance. So it needs to all kind of blend together and i was trying to do a more modern coastal type of vibe.

For the kitchen overhead light, i like this: https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/birch-lane-hastings-4-light-13-lantern-geometric-semi-flush-mount-w004205253.html?piid=67529284

I just have no idea what could go with this light though since you see this light and the pendants all in one glance it needs to be harmonious.

these are the best i could come up with but they would be too huge? mabye i could just do two and cap the third light? https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/Lighting-Ceiling-Fans/Modern-Gold-Geometric-Metal-Frame-1-Light-Globe-Glass-Shade-Pendant-Lights-for-Kitchen-Island-Dining-Room/34407486/product.html?option=65236177&recalg=1007,1006&recset=517f389a-c3e1-4ddd-af0e-68d9f0dbfa36&refccid=RZ4KHOF64QTZMC2IO2HK2FXBEU&recguid=b5aa9700-f12e-4b9f-a171-126b5c5c86ce&recidx=4

For the bar stools I like these:

- I really like these but they are just out of budget. Maybe i can find similar?

OR

-I like the brass ones since i want to swap the hardware for brass so maybe these could be cute

@Patricia Colwell Consulting 100% agree on it being one level but not sure that is something that can be done right away. The second I saw it i hated that it was multi level like that but then that would entail getting entirely new kitchen counter tops and that isnt going to happen right away.

We are only doing 2 stools to start (they actually have a fourth going around on the other side), but we have to order something to sit on. We are moving across country so most of the current furniture is not coming (and our current house is way too modern for this house). I dont want to order the bar stools than hate it with lighting I choose so im at least trying to plan ahead as to not waste money. So the kitchen is the first "project."

We wont have a dinning room table or anything yet (no sofa no nothing) and im still trying to decide if i rip out the beadboard they put in the dinning room i havent choose a table since the table i like wouldn't go with beadboard.

Find a couple stools on Marketplace and use until you have a better feel for your overall plan. The overhang looks pretty shallow and you may find it uncomfortable for regular use. Another option is to use a folding table and chairs. Good luck with your move.

The narrow ledge of the island takes it to a stand up space. A stool that accommodates your bum moves you too far away to eat comfortably. Follow previous advice and get a fold up table (more sturdy tan most card tables and great for your future open house) and folding chairs. At least that is an inexpensive alternative to sitting on the floor and eating off a packing box, lol.

    @maggieq there isn’t a marketplace it’s a super rural place.

It will be seating there. The kids will eat breakfast and snacks there likely. I won’t.

We eat dinner every night at the table and lunch. Breakfast is more of a free for all.

I’m a hard no on getting stuff I plan on getting rid of in a few months time. I’d rather not waste money and then have to get rid of items causing clutter.

  • last month

@valinta yeah instead of getting a cheaper table, its why I’m trying to choose bar stools. I really don’t like to collect stuff I need to get rid of or spend money on stuff I don’t need to. Rather save and get the right thing the first time.

To be clear it’s an open floor plan not open house like a sale

Strongly agree with @Patricia Colwell Consulting & all other’s recommendation to wait! You’ll save so much $$ & not make decisions you regret. You may learn that the peninsula counter can be easily matched to existing & cutting that multi level to one level will be within budget. Looks like no plumbing or appliances in the peninsula so cost will be very reasonable. Plug in outlet can be added to the open end of cabinet. I promise you that doing that will be a game changer for how your kitchen functions. We cut our 2 level island down to counter height so I do know. We kept the same aerial footprint as we already had a deep overhang for seating. Our island is backed with beadboard too but is ebony color. Leave yours - it looks great & goes with most styles. Wait on replacing lights until your peninsula is one level - you’ll have many more choices because counter space will be wider. You do need to live in the space to determine if there’s room to expand the width of counter to add an overhang deep enough to sit at & slide stools under.

I appreciate the advice to wait all but it’s really not what was asked here. The lighting has to be changed. It’s not functioning. And getting bar stools is something they is needed when moved in so my kids have a place. I’m making this move as smooth as possible for them. So planning now of what is needed is what I need to do.

To get the island one height was a quote of 10k to get all the counter tops to match it and it’s not a priority and won’t be changed for 10+ years. The lighting has to be changed out as they aren’t functioning. So it’s the first project to have them changed out at the same time and the electrical work is being done before move in.

    Congrats on the house!

If it were me — for the pendants I would want something softer and without a down-rod in that smaller space - lighting is super personal but I love the pendants from UK brand Original BTC, they have a line made with bone china with cloth cords

for the stools - I have the CB2 ones you posted and love them but wonder if they will project into the walkway? if not, then I would choose those, they take up almost no visual space which will be nice (my son’s friend told his mom we have glass chairs lol)

    La_la girl

Thanks I will look at their lighting. I had the cb2 stools in an apt before and really did love them.

We have their Drop 1 which is likely too modern for what you are thinking - but i love the Hector (I think not having a metal finish helps them stay a bit more neutral) and they are pretty from every angle

The clear stools you are considering are counter height not bar height but found these on Wayfair at bar height which seem to be identical:

    https://www.wayfair.ca/furniture/pdp/mercer41-jaylah-26-bar-stool-c001524046.html?piid=790103043

I would suggest smaller pendants such as a mini cylinder style:

Here's the look with 2 pendants if you decide to cap the 3rd one.

@lisedv thanks for this! My concern is that the stools are too modern but it’s such a tight space I liked these for visual space reason (every apt we had in dc had these because they take up such little visual space. I have no ideal what style this kitchen is but def not as modern as our current one.

I think that cb2 sells bar stool height still. Or they used to but that was a few years ago.

Regarding the style, the clear plastic one is less expensive but the style very different from the other one you posted.

So my question is: what is your style in the adjoining open concept room? that would certainly help all of us to give you any valuable suggestions since we cannot guess what you have.

Checked CB2 and they don't seem to have the bar height stool.

Just realized I sent you the Canadian website to the bar height stool but find it strange that it's less expensive on the Canadian website at $269.99 compared to the US website as it's usually the opposite:

@lisedv I can show you what I put together so far. Each room will be done a month basically. Neither of the concepts ive shown are final by any means but it gives you an idea what im going for. The blue on the wall will be old navy by benjamin moore unless i decide to just pain it all white, i havent decided.

You've made nice choices. Having the brass finish base dresses-up the stools and I think that they coordinate nicely with your selection so far. Here's putting it together... (not your island but this picture being brighter with the white island gives a better idea of the look.

@lisedv eventyally we will have a brighter white kitchen, its what i prefer but that will be in ten years or so as this house is stretching our budget for now. Bright white kitchen is what i prefer. The walls will be painted though out a pretty bright white as well. The biggest issue i have is the flooring in the house doesnt quite match the style im going for but I know eventually it will be refinished (at some point lol).

The existing kitchen seems to be white it's just that your photo shows it a bit dark on my screen.

As for the white you want to paint the walls, I would go for a warm white (and test the colour before painting the entire space).

  • last month

Thanks! It’s actually a light gray in there now. I’ll give these all a look. I tend to avoid warm and i hate yellow undertones 😂 but I’ll give these colors a look.

  • last month

Wonder if you should rethink the brass hardware then?

  • PRO
    last month

Here are comments on 3 of the warm whites suggested which don't have yellow undertones. You have to test them in your room(s). Paint a sample on a large foam core board and walk around the room(s) at different time of the day under different lights. I don't think a "bright" white would work with the furniture you've selected.

  • last month

@lisedv Thanks I will totally paint a foam core board and walk around.

@la_la Girl the rest of the house will have brass lighting so it’s what made me think I should continue it in the kitchen too.
