Converting arches to pillars
Comments (28)I looked at lots of photos of prairie houses and I'm not sure where the connection between my home and a prairie style lies. I think every single one had a shingle roof and none had arches. I did see a lot of brick in those photos so that seems to be the big thing my house has in common. As I think this through I think the money that would be spent on converting the arches would be better spent on some solar and a new roof that will keep the house cooler. We get awfully hot in the summer here. I also dislike the roof a lot more than the arches. So if I had to eliminate one, it would be the roof. I gotta say, this experience of remodeling the house and in a lot of ways transforming it, has been exhausting....See MoreRemoving wall between Dining room and Living room
Comments (6)Not understanding the "half wall" comment -- hard to give advice without knowing what the rest of the layout looks like. Right now the wall and doorways control the flow of traffic in a certain way. If/when you remove the wall, what will traffic patterns be like? Let's assume you can successfully relocate the heating and solve the flooring issue...appears that you have pretty large rooms, and will have the opportunity to arrange and rearrange until you find a furniture layout that works for the space. You might consider finding an on-line app or use a furniture store's app that allows you to put in a room's dimension and then put in furniture and move it around -- it's kind of fun....See Moresloped ceiling in living room, kitchen/dining room. Comments (28)They certainly add weight to the room. Painting them won't change that. Part of the beauty of stone is the variation-painting makes all surfaces equal and flat and less flattering IMHO. I too would have suggested you go with the color not against it as you did with your furnishings. Saying that my parents had a circa 1950's HEAVY black bedroom suit of furniture. Over the years my mom tried different décor options to flow with the black. Gold is her current trend and it does look good. Very formal not as contemporary as the lines of your current furniture. The black is fine--it's the grays I would work on letting go....See MoreRelated Professionals
