Open concept kitchen change to sitting/tv room?
Comments (3)When we added onto our house (a first floor great room, and a second floor master suite) we moved our dining area into the former living room and I did just what you are thinking about - I have a sitting room where the dining area used to be. The spaces are not large - they all open to each other and the kitchen. We took the chandelier down from the old dining area and installed a ceiling fan. I have baker's racks with pottery, plants and baskets of table linens. I have a loveseat and a comfortable reading chair + ottoman in the space. I call it the "cook's nook". No t.v. - I refuse to have one in that end of the house. I have one of those compact Bose Wave radio/CD players and I listen to it all of the time. My husband built bookshelves under the overhanging countertop of the old breakfast bar - we took the stools out. I have my cookbooks and gardening books there, and can display pottery there too. So now we only have one place where we have meals, and that's at the dining room table. It's in front of the old fireplace that used to be the living room. We hung a chandelier from the cathedral ceiling in that space. There's a staircase in the room that goes up to the spare bedrooms. I have room for several large buffets, one along the staircase and one under a bank of windows. Overall, we love the repurposing. We have no "only use it a few times a year" formal areas in our house. It works very well for us. The t.v. is in the new great room. I can get away from it whenever I want lol. seagrass...See MoreHelp please with tv room/ living room
Comments (25)Neutrals are quite hard to decorate with, they pose no less difficulties than color, if not more..that's why it's hard. (Wood stains are easier. Not all of them but most of them. That's because we really see them as neutrals-lots of trees around)) Fabrics and paint..yeah, we consider such and such neutral yet it still bosses us around to a degree. They are warm, cool, light, dark, whatnot But. From what I see you like both earthy and luxurious elements..am I right? I think if you pull colors from your living. Light ones, whites, color of the sofa, colors of metal in your dining chandelier..And you translate it into textiles. Fabrics. But make them as earthy as your furniture-bigger and with a lot of texture, different texture, Yet a bit luxurious as well. Say faux fur. Add a throw, couple pillows. Go for different textures. Don't make these skimpy..should feel comfy, and break the expanse of furniture. And-you should love it. Really want to use it. It's about the feel as much as it is about decor. You can add an accent color you love. Actually you can add many. Start slow and see where it takes you. Just be generous about different textures, and sizes of things. Not a lot of small pillowsbut a coupe of really cool ones. Along these lines. Put books on yout table..if you like them of course. Or a tray. Bring in plants. You can add a rug, for interest and pattern and fun. You'll add curtains at some point, I suppose. You'll add art-no need to hurry. As you go you can decide to move pieces..say an ottoman, a small side table..you'll become more relaxed, will play with placement more, will add colors, will decide to substract colors. You'll figure out your comfort zone, I love your bunnies. The ones on the dining table. I look at them and see a sort of a clue. They seem cozy where they are. Is there a bird cage in the corner? It is intimidating indeed to start off..and no place can get done in a day, unless it was collected for years (or painstainkingly designed in advance like it was collected for years) and then you just called movers. (and even then will need tweaking and thinking and whatnot). But as you go you get more like a bird or a bunny:) More carefree. You start enjoying. You make mistakes-well it's not an open heart surgery, you know. You tweak it, you play with it, you have fun, in the end of the day....See MoreLighting help in office/play area flex room

Comments (9)Here's a revised layout. Your room, because of the odd size, is all about furniture scale. All of the seating should be low back and not over sized or "puffy". Think a more tailored design with a down dacron wrap cushion with a lush fabric. With a sectional not more than 9'-0" , you will have plenty of space on either side for walk thru. Consider the new Sunbrella or Perennials high performance fabrics for all of the upholstery, these fabrics are wonderful for a family room and indestructible. I have tested them out for a client with catsup and clean up was a dream! Also a smaller scaled sofa facing the fireplace/tv with a console behind, slightly protruding into the dining space to visually create a wider room. That's a low interesting bench in front of the fireplace. Everyone on here always thinks I put too much furniture in a space. I am used to designing NYC apartments where space is at a premium and entertaining is key. This a room for an invitation to relax, read, play games and enjoy your family. Hope this will inspire you!...See MoreRelated Professionals
