36 inch Ranges Versus 48 inch Ranges
Comments (10)I love our 48" Viking. There is plenty of room when dh and I are cooking at the same time and the extra space also comes in handy when I'm cooking alone. I love having unused burners to slide hot pots onto for cooling off or as landing space for hot items from the oven. It contains all the hot items to one space instead having them scattered across the counter on trivets. And there are times when all of our burners are used at once (we have 6 + a griddle.) I use the small oven most of the time for our family of 4. The large oven is handy when I cook mulitiple items at the same temp or when I use large cookie sheets. Having 2 ovens comes in handy for different oven temps and for when one oven is tied up by something baking for an hour that shouldn't be disturbed. Take your favorite baking dishes to the showroom to make sure they fit into the small oven. The dishes I brought were a 9" Pyrex pie pan and a 9x13 pan. They fit fine in our Viking but didn't in some other brands. The brand I was leaning toward got eliminated because the oven rack brackets decreased the usable space so much that I couldn't fit either of the 2 dishes I brought. Just reading the oven specs wouldn't have been good enough since it seemed the oven was plenty big. Dh was happy we ended up with his top choice by default. I would definitely buy another 48" range if I had to do over again. Getting a range with 2 ovens and plenty of burner/elbow space was a splurge that made a lot of sense to us....See More36" range vs 48" rangetop- help me so I don't have to flip a coin
Comments (11)I have a 36" rangetop and frequently use 4 burners, and sometime use 5. I've even used all 6! If you count having a pan of something from the ovens cooling on a burner or two, then I use 6 pretty regularly. Hey, that would be another "pro" for a cooking surface with more burners: using one or two as a cooling rack for oven items while still having other burners available for active cooking. If you choose rangetop and want that attractive 4 door look, I suggest having one wide drawer with the front made to look like two separate drawers. 24" wide drawers won't be effective for storing pots and pans. Wider is usually better....See MoreCan I fit a 36" range in a 40" space between two windows?
Comments (14)My house was built about the same time, and I understand working around existing elements. Are you planning a tile backsplash? Will you use window treatments--curtains, shades, etc.? Is there any reason (safety code, aesthetics) you couldn't have the hood overlap the windows slightly, then tile the window wells up to the level the hood starts, with window trim above? Or tile to the ceiling, and all around the windows, skipping the wood trim? Would that look to institutional? I suppose the tile would need to be set out slightly to match 3/4 thick window trim, or window trim would need to be re-sawed to be the thickness of the tile. Obviously, I didn't include a chimney. Comments (23)If I follow your math and the plan posted - 185 - 24 - 27 -42 -27 - 24-3 = 38" /2 = 19" on each side of the hood assuming a 42" wide hood. If you take the 27" cabinets down to 24 then its 22" on each side. Are you tiling the whole wall? If so, then you don't have to account for molding so you could have a 15-16" wide window. As for your island - Please before ordering any cabinet, figure out what top you are going to do. The 7'6 isn't the problem - it's the 5'6" - not all stones come that size . I would go down to 5 ft and put that space into the walkway between the sink and stove. I would also move the sink so it is not right behind the stove so 2 people aren't back to back. It's too big and really squeezed in there . I would try turning the island, resizing it and do the seating with 2 on the end and 2 on the side. Since you said you don't necessarily need all the storage, this may give you some more floor space. Good luck!...See MoreRelated Professionals
