Usually ottomans are about 1" lower ot the same ht. As a table set away from the sofa it wouldn't matter. Touching the sofa it may look a little out of sorts.

Thanks!, yes right now they are just small plantlets, separated them and I am sure once they grow bigger and taller....the look the display will be ever changing. @razamatazzy...the sofa, we bought a few months ago at Macys for around $600, its the Chloe velvet tufted sofa. It feels lovely and doesnt stain easily. The reviews are really good, so far I have had no problems, though its only been a few months for me. Cooks.

I like the rug and think it goes well with the couch. I certainly don't think it looks short - and wouldn't even think of it if I were in your room unless you mentioned it. I like the muted palette of the rugs and I think it works well with the rich brown of the sofa. And certainly you can lighten the mood with better lighting as well as painting the dark woodwork. Just a thought - maybe two smaller coffee table height tables - or ottomans that can double as coffee tables would work better for a smaller space since they are more easily moved around. Not sure if those are reclining sofas but for me it's comfier to have a place (preferably soft) to put my feet up when really relaxing on a sofa. What's wrong with the floor? It looks like a nice lightish wood floor - at least from the picture.

you say you're not a design person? does that mean you can't do accessories to pull things together? no. your charcoal couch leans to the cooler blue end of the spectrum. your flooring, bookcase, fireplace tile, are all warmer, yellow tones. The desk you like is neutral. (personally I'd change the tile around the fireplace, and lose that orange toned mantle. doing that will help a lot ) bring in a rug to bridge the yellow floors w/the blue gray, and throw on some coordinating colors in pillows Greenery always helps. look at the fireplace and some options w/new tile and mantle, how it works better w/sofa. (then I'd suggest painting the wall behind the bookshelves a dark gray, and putting something on the shelves.
