It's not too loud most of the time, but is noticeable when the room is otherwise quiet. I am staring to get used to the sounds made by the cooktop. They are louder when the pan is cold or empty, and the sizzling or bubbling does effectively cover up the tick-buzz rhythm. It also varies depending on what utensil is being, used with cast iron being the quietest. My Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 10" skillet is the noisiest , but a similarly sized Scanpan non-stick makes only moderate noise as does the 3 qt. Calphalon saute' pan. I guess it has to do with resonant frequencies and the physics of the situation. Since I really like the cooking performance, layout, efficiency and easy cleaning of the stove I will learn to live with the sounds it generates. My only other complaint with the unit is the childproof lock. I have no need for a nanny looking over my shoulder making sure I don't do anything dangerous. The unit doesn't even turn on unless there's a appropriately sized magnetic object on top and shuts off if it gets too hot. There are no locks on other types of cooktops. It is annoying to have to wait for the controls to unlock, but I have found that if I put a wet sponge on the "key", it will enable the controls while I do other things. Is there a way to permanently disable the lock feature for us grown-ups?

Bump! I bought the GE gas-on-glass cooktop ( JGP5536SLSS ) that I was considering sight unseen, and I am very disappointed. But I am also disappointed with GE because I tried to post an honest review pointing out my issues with it, and they will not allow it on their web site. Something about "moderating it" as not complying with their rules about discussing prices, installations, customer service issues, personal identifying information. So made a few edits that I hoped would make them happy. Nope, didn't even get a response to the edited version. My review that GE didn't post is below: * * * I recently had this gas-on-glass unit installed. I was hoping to avoid the difficulty of keeping a stainless unit clean, we have had gas-on-glass before, so we wanted to get it again. In the pictures, it looks great. We could not find it in any store, so we bought it sight unseen. It's a GE -- what could go wrong? Unfortunately, there are some problems that are not evident in the pictures. The knobs are light, cheap plastic and are not heavy and solid like I had hoped. There is one middle grate that is hefty and solid, but the two other side grates are thinner. It does look nice once you clean and windex it, but it is starting to develop spots that I cannot seem to get off (and it has only been a few weeks). This is even though I am diligent about cleaning it promptly. There is also a safety concern. When you turn the unit on, it clicks until it lights. Once it lights, you adjust the flame and are good to go. Well, one time I turned the knob to ignite, but apparently it did not ignite but the gas kept coming out. I could not see this because of the large pan that blocked my view of the flame. After a few seconds I noticed that it had not ignited and adjusted the knob to get it to light. The spark ignited the gas and flames shot out toward me. Had I not noticed the ignition failure quickly, I wonder if a bigger gas cloud would have ignited. I do not recall this ever happening with my prior gas cooktop. So I now have a cooktop that has plastic knobs that might someday injure someone because of the ignition mechanism. If I had it to do over, I would buy something else.

Hey C! Sorry to miss your message. The extra depth worked perfectly for me b/c I design ALLLLLLL my Kitchens w 30" deep counters ;) That said, you could do 30" for the cabinet (even if it's just an 8" spice cabinet) on either side of the range to help integrate an 'extra deep' oven. YES! Pots + pans not fitting was a huge issue for me. Thankfully, not anymore! I also use a lot of commercial-sized pots and pans, so am very happy w the depth of the Caliber range. I think the 'spoon rest' also helps - not just as a handy place for spoons, but for extra deep pots and pans to have breathing room. I haven't used the broiler, but the oven yet. I still don't have a completed Kitchen, so haven't fully been able to utilize all the things! My thinking is the same on the salamander. Oven seems to heat well - AND EVENLY! Which FYI I will also say for the 'star' burners - the entire pan, no matter how big, has the same bubbles when I cook, which tells me the pans are being heated really evenly. I did make Macarons - a very fussy little cookie - and the second batch (my mistakes on the first batch) turned out even and perfect.
