Allison, The main problem is the beetles. They arrived last year and I was hoping it was a one time thing but they are back again. Not JBs, though there are a few of JBs out there and I can only imagine what the future is going to be like once the JB population gets established. These are a different kind of beetle, but very destructive to rose blooms. I'm not going to spray any kind of insecticide because of the bee problems. I've definately noticed about a hundred fold less bees this year than usual and I would hate to kill the 1 or 2 that are out there in my yard. A 2nd problem is water. I have a well and there isn't enough water in there for all of these roses. The last 2 years my well has gone dry for long periods. I've just put in a 2nd rose garden so that means more water that I need and it just isn't there. A 3rd problem is that since my sinus surgery in December my sense of smell comes and goes. And what good are roses if you can't smell them? Might as well have a salvia garden or something that requires less care and less water. I do have the Marie Legonde cuttings you sent me under the misting system and she's still green so far. If this one roots it will have a place in my garden, don't worry about that! But I've got around 140 roses in the ground and 30 or more in pots waiting for fall. And with all of these problems I just don't know if I want to get any more roses. This coming summer I'm going to make a list of which roses get to stay and which ones get the boot and I'm going to be vicious. Carrie

Maureen, thanks for sharing the results of your own research. There is a lot of information out there and it certainly takes time to sort through it all, so I appreciate it. It is helpful to get a reality check. You don't want to be chasing after something that doesn't exist. Yes, I guess I would love to have something that keeps blooming until frost but I realize that there really isn't one rose that has all those qualities, but I figured it never hurts to ask. Rugosas, I would love if I were by the beach, but in my small garden, I have found shrubs that sucker to be difficult for me to deal with. I vacationed in a beach community as a child and loved the beach roses! I have had my eye on that Stanwell Perpetual and I didn't realize it repeats...I am going to have to take a good look at that, thanks, I would have zoomed past that one. It would seem the New Dawn has it's fans and then those who describe it as a monster...lol. I've heard that before lesmc. I'm still trying to make up my mind about it. Interesting that there might be different plants out there behaving differently. Consensus on the mild fragrance though. veilchen, I wish I had a wild corner on my property where I could fit some rugosas and just let them go. I have been reading lots of raves about New Dawn so it's good to hear the other side of it to get a clear picture. Thanks. You said 'mine is very vigorous'....did you mean you have the 'Teasing Georgia'? So it would seem that giving up the repeat bloom might allow me to have the rest of what I want. Maybe I can find something that repeats that I could compromise on the other traits to keep something in bloom. I like the albas. Good to know FParmentier is vigorous as well as pretty. Since my climate is a bit similar to UK, it seems that with teas a problem is not that much caused by our winters or lack of heat in the summer, but rather late spring freezes and temperature fluctuations in early spring. Overhere we can get very warm February (up to +15C) and some roses break dormancy, just to get zapped by late frosts in March/April. It is my constant cause of frustration with hydrangeas, since if the new growth freezes, it is whole season of meh. It seems that you have to winter protect teas and chinas here at least for the first years to get some of the more woody canes, when settled they have way less problems with the climate. Own root probably would be a better option as well, since even if it is not cane hardy, it can grow back. I know somebody attempting to grow Lady Hilingdon climber 50 miles more inland from here and apparently it comes through the winter undamaged, but late spring, especially when wet, often is what kills it to the ground. It grows back and blooms though with no problem, so you get some sort of perennial rose. I am going to try a few chinas/more tender noisettes this season, so will see if it is possible to grow it here, although I am going to wrap them into agricultural fleece for the winter. I will go for own roots, but if to get it grafted I would vote for getting it from Trevor White, although Beales ones did for me almost as good. ;)

And a glass of soy milk (7 g. protein) & brewer's yeast & honey lasts me 4 hours without eating. Recently I did something different: finish the last bar of Klondite ice-cream (230 calories, 14 g of fat, 20 g white sugar) & sweet & greasy. Right after that, my blood sugar crashed, I was unbearably hungry and had to eat a meal immediately. I checked the ingredients: it has sugar & corn syrup (high fructose corn syrup). A little of fat plus protein is useful to keep one full. But fat plus sugar induce more hunger. I tested blueberry-smoothie made with 0% fat Greek yogurt versus 2% fat yogurt, and the 2% fat yogurt is more filling & last longer. CONCLUSION: Fat & protein & veggies is a good combo. Fat is needed to absorb the nutrients in veggies better. We have a friend who's a vegetarian and he ALWAYS USE full-fat salad-dressing, plus full-fat cheese on his salads, and he's just as skinny as husband in their late 50's. I used coconut oil to make banana muffin, and olive oil in my cooking. So it would seem that coconut oil would be bad news for our hearts. But what's interesting about coconut oil is that it also gives "good" HDL cholesterol a boost. We don't really know how coconut oil affects heart disease. It's less tasty than NOW brand (sold out at local health food store). Solgar BY has a "plastic" & artificial taste to it, and less acidic than NOW. So I'll use Solgar BY for my roses, and still need to buy NOW brewer's yeast when they stock up.
