4x4 white wall tile, bathroom update

We are replacing the tub with a walk in tiled shower for my father. We are keeping the 4x4 white wall tile and larger white floor tile. What tile would look best for the shower?? My dad is 88 and just said he liked white, but we are willing to explore other neutral options. This is the only pic I have.

Usually when doing this type of change all the stuff is ripped out all new waterproofing and new tile . Trying to save tile is never a great plan so IMO pick a tile you like for the shower ideally something that works with the floor which we cannot see. Take a pic from further back to show us the whole area .

I suggest you remove all the tile and build your shower properly with the waterproofing material, etc. By not removing the existing tiles you'd have to match them at the bottom where the tub is being removed which will be almost impossible. If the person likes white tiles, simply rebuild a white shower. Consider large tiles for ease of cleaning with less grout.

I don't know about subway vs square. But here is a picture of a bathroom at the hospital I work at that was built in the early 50's. I took these several months ago as I was getting ready to tile my 4x4 wainscot. In my old bathroom it was plastered to replicate 4x4 tiles. This bathroom was built either in the 30's or 40's. I would put the tub right across from the door, flanked by 3' vanities on each side. Change the door swing and put the toilet either in its own closet or on its own behind the door (personal preference here - mine would be a closet with a pocket door if it fits, but if it doesn't, the door would provide some privacy). The shower would need to flip 90 degrees. Other option: tub across from the door, shower on one side, toilet on the other, and vanities on each side of the door. I'm a big fan of individual vanities in master baths! With this layout, though, you probably wouldn't have symmetry.

@Jenn Powers - looks great! what brand/color grout did you use? @Marina Galassi- what color/brand grout did you use? I almost had my bathroom painted before my tile was installed - im really glad that the painters had a scheduling change. Initially, I wasn’t using Cloe White in the tub surround - and the paint color I selected would not have looked nice! I am very confused about what paint color to select now.

We are removing the walls of the shower portion as well. Just leaving the old tiled wall for the bathroom part.

Chances are good that the 4" white tile is American Olean or Dal Tile, since those are very popular brands and have been for decades. Pick up some samples at your local tile shop, not a big box store, to see which white matches. They have all the trim pieces such as bullnose. Here's a sample of their classic white tiles:

Agree with lisedv and patricia. You are better off ripping out everything and replace with new tile.
