Remodeling Flooring Design Dilemma

Which way to run tile?

We're in the middle of a renovation and I can't make up my mind on which direction to run the tile.

Tile is 10 inch x 40 inch wood look porcelain tile being installed on a slab, so no joists or anything to worry about. We're doing the same tile throughout the house.

I was originally leaning towards side to side because as you walk in the front door, you're walking right into the family room which is wide, however when I think about the kitchen/living room and master/master bath (as well as the hallway back to the other bedrooms), it makes more sense I feel to run it front to back.

Most of the light coming in to the house is coming in from the back - we have walls on the sides of the house that separate us from our neighboring houses.

I prefer to see the lengths running the long way.

it's a personal choice, I guess.

Take a look at this older thread that addresses your question. I would be inclined to do a pattern like herringbone like that first pic (my inspiration for my MBath too!), or put them on the diagonal like elphaba did. You can find her reno in "Bathrooms", here. Also, think about the grout. Do you want it to be light so that it looks like a tile floor or blend in so that it looks more like wood? I put it in my living room and hall and chose the darkest grout they had for more of a wood floor look. Here is a link that might be useful: Wood-look tile thread

We would recommend running the hardwood flooring left to right because of the main living space. (see center image below.) It will be difficult to advise you on tile direction without knowing what tile you are installing. Good luck with your project!

I agree. Front to back. No question about it.

While the living room is wide, it is also mostly a square, so the tile would look right in either direction. But that is the only room that would look OK with the tile running left to right.

With front to back, the tile in the entry will lead you into your home. And front to back is definitely better in all of the other spaces.
