How would you divide paint and paper in this space?

This is a follow up post about our new 1913 home -- we plan to do a combination of paint and paper in the dining room which flows into the living room space - so we want a cohesive color scheme. You all recommended this line of wallpaper and we love this one we found -- thoughts? (All of the furniture in the photos will be gone and replaced!) Paper above chair rail trim and paint below, or other way around, or? TIA!

Paper below the chair rail, and paint for the top. You may be able to leave the white you have. I notice tiny white flowers in your paper. If you want a color, pick one of the lighter colors from your new wallpaper.

Haha I would do the opposite- wallpaper on top, darkest green from it for the wall below.

Thanks Bill! Let me make sure I understand. Note: those index cards are not quite to scale (not quite 3x6, and liner not 1/2 x6). The entire area to be tiled is 73.5 by 14.25 inches. 1. Take an inch off the top course so that both top row, and bottom row are less than 3" tall. Top would be 2" instead of 3, and bottom row would be 2.5 instead of 1.5. 2. Center the whole thing so that I have a teeny piece on each top side, left and right, rather than starting at the left side (as I did with the cards) and ending up with a scrap on the right side. 3. Move the accent line down. Is that right? Even though I have always wanted to reproduce the original accent row, I am beginning to think I might have to scrap it. If I do, the subways will fit the 14.25 height a bit better. Moving them down a course also gets them awfully close to the faucet. The original splash had them below the first course, but then the original counters were a different height. Without the liner, there will be room for 4 and 2/3 tiles. Then I just need to decide if the cut tile goes top or bottom. Or split the difference. Am I figuring all that correctly? *sigh* I couldn't really afford those gorgeous liners anyway. They cost more than all of the filed tile does. Thanks again! :-) Francy

Hollysprings: It's a beverage bar and its the one thing that DH really likes because it will also function as the bar for the LR & DR -- that's why we have the open counter there (the wall of the bar is a full wall except for the open counter on the end). I agree that the sink would be great there, but DH won't give up his bar ;) The table will either be odd or fabulous -- it is divided with the sliding glass door so when we have larger family meals, we can open the slider and have a longer table. I may have to reconsider it though. I'm still struggling to retain the architect's vision but restore functionality. I feel like I'm having far too difficult a time organizing a space that should be plenty large enough for everything. Annie -- Right now, the ovens are stacked 2 & 2 (regular oven, steam oven, microwave, warming drawer). I might be able to stack the reg oven, steam, and warming drawer and then move the micro either to the island or the pantry (we rarely use it). How would you divvy up a 48" run of drawer space?

Yes, measure! Then don't forget that interior drawer space will be about 3 inches less than outside measurement of the cabinet (2x side wall thickness + 2x drawer side thickness + a little for clearance and maybe glides). Maybe a tad bigger, but 3 in is easier to ballpark. I would not advise 12 inch drawers unless they are just the top of a pullout. My frameless 12 inch drawer is just big enough for pot holders and trivets. Thankfully, I only have one that size. A 4 drawer 18-21 inch or so (whatever will fit your placemats) might be useful. That would be a good size for flatware (maybe even a double layer flatware drawer? I love those!), placemats, serving utensils, and the larger bottom drawer might fit your napkins or tablecloths. The pots and pans should mostly fit under the cooktop. That would leave 27-30 in for your cooking utensils (top drawer) and dishes below that. I have 2 x 27 in frameless drawers that hold all our everyday pots/pans. The top drawer there holds a knife block and cooking utensils. Roasting pan, wok, cast iron grill pan, and a few larger/rarely used pieces are located in drawers under the oven on the other side of the room. I also have 2 x 30 in frameless drawers for dishes. That's plenty, I actuall wish I had shorter drawers as there is a good amount of wasted vertical space. Plus I have enough room for towels in the bottom drawer with the dishes. I have drinking vessels still in the uppers.

don't paint the cabinets, they look like they work well with the rest of your house. we have knotty hickory cabinets similar in look to yours in our house we bought year ago. even though I wasn't crazy about them at first I love them now. we painted the walls Valspar "smoked oyster" a warm gray with brown undertones. its a lot nicer than the stark white the walls were originally painted. our cabinet hardware is oiled bronze, I think it works better with the grain of the wood. someday I plan on changing the appliances to slate or black stainless. there is gray in our flooring even though this picture doesn't look like it. and this picture is not the best its dark so I'm showing our laundry because it shows the color better.

So glad you want to use William Morris paper. Your dining room in so gorgeous. Typically wallpaper is done above a chair rail, but your rail is so high, won't see very much of it in your space if you do it that way. But that might be fine. With the perfect paint color on the lower wall, the dash of paper at the top will be a gorgeous accent instead of the star of the show.

This pic can help you visualize. Pretty stunning cream color on the walls and looks great with wood work.

Either way looks nice, but, I would prefer the paper to be the star, in a house of that age. Its a very pretty room.

I think in a historic context this room may have had two wallpapers in it (at least) with a wall fill paper like the pattern you have shown below the plate rail (this is a plate rail not a chair rail, at this height) and a frieze paper above the chair rail. Or even a frieze with a border or borders. (And it may also have had a plainer ceiling paper) They frequently sold things as roomsets of coordinating papers. Sometimes in these houses the ceiling paper would be faux gilded burlap textured paper.

For example, these period friezes are are about 20" high: I am not suggesting either of these specifically, just showing how it was done.

So I would probably use the paper you have Under the plate rail since it is an overall pattern and paint above the plate rail, and consider painting the ceiling the same color as above the plate rail.

@Kendrah’s idea will give the room more light. @palimpsest’s is more historically correct. I would do whichever is more cohesive with the way you’re decorating the rest of your home.

You cannot go wrong with Morris paper. Ever. Love the color and the pattern choice.
