Living Room Layout... when the room isn't square or rectangle
Comments (7)My brain works a little odd -- let me offer that at the start. I guess I consider room functions first, then assign a subset of the area to achieve it. Any shape can include a (visual) square or rectangle to make the placement work. I can't move my fireplace or the flat TV, so if I get bored with a layout I draw the shape of the room and place the squares/rectangles differently to help with furniture placement. Last year I replaced a sofa with two chairs and that one part of the room became good for conversation and a perfect spot for reading by the fire. Reading this, it sounds weird. :\ My problem is I tend to incorporate the whole space rather than breaking it down into pieces. The drawing helps me focus and shows what can or can;t be done....See MoreLiving Room Layout for Open Concept Room

Comments (1)Hi there! I’d be happy to help you brainstorm some ideas for your unusual living room layout. Here are some thoughts based on your options: Option 1 - Leave the same layout: Moving the HVAC vent could definitely open up your space for a built-in unit under the TV, creating a nice focal point with an electric fireplace. Option 2 - L-Shaped Seating: Rotating the loveseat for an L-shape arrangement can enhance conversation and make the space feel cozier while keeping the pathways clear. Option 3 - 14ft Wall: Placing the TV on the 14ft wall is a great idea! You can position the sofa and loveseat to maximize the view without blocking windows or the stairs. Consider floating furniture away from the walls to create flow and make the room feel larger. Option 4 - Corner TV Placement: Moving the TV to the corner could work well, but ensure that the sofa placement allows for easy movement around the space. An L-shape here might create a comfortable nook. It sounds like you have some great options to explore! Comments (3)I think you have some options when it comes to sofa vs sectional, but you don't want to get anything overly large. For example, an 80" sofa with 2 large end tables would pretty much block the 11' width of the room (facing the TV) so you would want to do just one end table and a coffee table instead, or two very narrow (less that 20") wide end tables. If you go with a sofa, I think you would want to face the TV for comfort, and maybe do two chairs on either side of the fireplace. For a sectional, a smaller "L" style would be about all that could fit. If you were my client through Ethan Allen, we would do a complimentary floor plan first, to make sure whatever options we were considering fit appropriately and didn't overwhelm the space. This would also help decide what kind of tables we would need/could fit in the space....See MoreRelated Professionals
