Defective DVD Disc?

Just bought a brand new sealed DVD set. It is a series with 3 discs. They all skip. They will run for awhile and then stop. When it starts again it has skipped the portion when it was stopped.

I tried it on 2 different players. Last night I ran an old DVD for over 2 hours with no problem, thus I concluded that the player was OK.

Is there anything I can do to fix the discs?

As a WAG, given that the DVD set was new, is it possible you are trying to run Blue Ray DVDs in an "old school" regular DVD player. I've never done that, but speculate that the tracks are finer for the Blue Ray disks.

With used DVDs, it is possible to look at them at an angle in the sunlight and sometimes see grunge that is interfering with tracking.

It's a DVD Video, not a Blue Ray.

Make sure the file you have created is not still open. Close your burner software and any other software accessing the file, and remove the dvd from the drive. Then try to rename it again. If you still can not rename it, right click the file in windows explorer, select properties, and ensure that it attributes are not set to protected, hidden, or read only. If they are, uncheck the boxes, click apply, then click ok. Try to rename it again. if this still does not work, try rebooting your conputer. If this still does not work, please type the exact error code you receive here.

Unfortunately, lost the receipt and warranty work requires it. However, I did revive it by forcing the read head back to the outer edge of the disc. While it was off, I just moved the head back--it seemed stuck in the center. I wouldn't do this on something that I didn't think was a lost cause anyway, and it just happened to work (for now). I guess the stepper motor was frozen up. We'll see how long it lasts now.

Some players are very finicky. I had to experiment with brands and format (R+, R-, RW+, RW-) before finding a surefire disk for my Toshiba player (several years old). Verbatim DVD-Rs for me, exclusively.

We are taking the plunge and looking at getting a Panasonic or Hitachi (haven't decided which) dvd camcorder. I've been studying the formats and have learned that we'll need a dvd-r so it will play on our Panasonic dvd player. (Unfortunately, my computer is dvd+rw so i can't edit on it.) I've also heard a little bit about DVD-RAM but still in the dark a lot on that one. So, having learned that much I still am confused about a couple of things and hope that some experienced person will help me out. 1. DVD-RAM: -when they say you can edit right on the camcorder, do they mean only if DVD-RAM disc or can you edit DVD-R's? -what kind of editing will the camera do? e.g.: does it do chapters? -my dvd player will play DVD-RAM discs as long as they are not in the cartridge. I have never seen a RAM disc-do they come out of the cartridge for dvd player use? -what are the advantages/disadvantages of DVD-RAM? -can you/do you finalize DVD-RAM? 2. do you need to format DVD-R/RAM discs before using them? 3. if I record in 16:9 format, (which is what I want), how will it view on 4:3 ration screens? 4. what is a good CCD number? TIA-I really appreciate any information you can give me.

I have run across new-in-box DVDs exhibiting that problem, freezing/skipping at a particular spot or a few/several spots. I'm not aware of a fix, which is not to say there may not be a method. Have you searched accordingly?

Yes, they said its probably a scratch and try to rub it out with toothpaste. I DID find a scratch and "Crest" made it worse.

I found that suggestion after posting above. Since the DVD is no good I figured what the heck...

Board users can't move posts. I've tagged it as "Inappropriate or Abusive" which is the only suitable selection from the available choices. The board moderator will hopefully read the thread in response to the tagging and move it accordingly (and not delete it!).

Houzz needs to add more choices for tagging and make them more specific to common problems. The three choices are too narrow to fit all situations.
