Dekton? Yay or Nay?

We are upgrading our kitchen and looking at countertops.

My kitchen contractor is pushing dekton at me. According to her, there isn’t a price difference between dekton and quartz, and dekton is so much more durable.

Anyone with dekton countertops? How happy are you with them? I love the look of dekton, however most google reviews mention how easy it is to chip and that it’s irreparable. I spoke to a couple of fabricators, and they also mentioned how difficult dekton was to work with.

My countertops are currently priced at 20k for approx 180 sqft of dekton. We plan to have it on the countertops, a large island (10 ft long), backsplash and up to the ceiling at a certain spot. Does the price sound ok?

For those with quartz - how is it holding up? Staining / browning / responsiveness to heat? Especially since we plan to use it as a backsplash as well. Would the flame from the cooktop affect the backsplash?

FYI - I currently have granite and would prefer a change

See the search box at the top of this page? Search Dekton in Discussions to read about others’ experiences with the material. It can chip. There is no perfect counter material, that absolutely includes quartz (search that too).

Thanks for the suggestion. i went down that rabbithole and now have more questions.

for those who installed a cooking range against the wall, how much clearance did you keep? Who should I be asking these questions to? The countertop fabricators, kitchen designer or the appliance salesman? Given how expensive each of these individual items are, I’d really like to make an informed decision.

what natural stone materials would you recommend for countertop and a full backsplash? Also, is there a need to fireproof the wall?

I made lentil soup yesterday for dinner and served it with tortilla chips. I do not use broth to make lentil soup (as I said earlier), but I do add a couple of teaspoons of Knorr Chicken Bouillon instead of adding salt. I could use salt instead, but the bouillon gives it a richer flavor, although it is an extremely minor component to the flavor. The soup I made also had dehydrated carrots (I don't use enough fresh carrots to keep them on hand, except when I make cole slaw), potatoes, celery, half of a chile de árbol, a can of Ro⭑Tel Tomatoes, half an onion, a couple of garlic cloves, a tablespoon of oregano and thyme, 1-1/3 cups dried lentils, some olive oil, and enough water for cooking. If I had used homemade chicken broth instead of water, I would not have been able to tell an appreciable difference. If it had been potato soup, it would have been a completely different matter. When I make split pea soup, it has very few ingredients, and so the broth does make a difference, since I do not add ham or any meat to it.

We did this two years ago in the same situation. It is great! :) Our shower is the same size and feels plenty big. Wall-hung toilets can help with the clearance--our city requires 24" clear. What is on the other sides of the long wall? I might also explore poaching or rebalancing space depending on what's there and whether those walls are load-bearing. If you post a floor plan, people may have suggestions.

I personally prefer Taj Mahal to be in a polished finish. The stone has beautiful translucence, sparkle, and depths like looking into deep water. Those things are muted or even gone when the stone is honed or leathered. I advise you to see slabs in both finishes to see which you prefer. You also need to have a good fabricator, and rely on their expertise. For a previous kitchen I chose a granite slab I loved. When the fabricator went to the stoneyard to pick it up, he refused it because he saw fissures in that slab that could create problems going forward. I chose another slab - the same exact granite - that did not have fissures. You won't have the expertise that a good fabricator has. Having said that, we see lots of tales of woe on this forum about bad fabricators who don't know what they are doing, and/or use poor tools that aren't sharp enough or that they don't understand, and end up messing up the slab. So be careful in your choice of fabricator. The choice of fabricator is as important or maybe more important than the choice of slab.

Tile has a high thermal mass. It holds onto heat well. There is zero reason it should affect that. What it WILL affect is the time factor of it heating up and cooling down, because of the additional thermal mass. But, since the floor should stay on low all the time it is being used, that shouldn't change a thing about the electrical bill. It's still using the same amount of energy to heat, albeit slower to heat and cool.

"what natural stone materials would you recommend for countertop and a full backsplash?" Many on this forum have used Taj Mahal quartzite for counters and backsplash. Taj is one of the more durable quartzites (and is beautiful IMO.) There's another quartzite that has been mentioned here as being very durable, but I can't remember which one(s). However this thread by a geologist might be a good read for you: 50 Shades for Quartzite

Are you set on using the same material for backsplash and counters? Asking because there are many gorgeous tiles, and using tile for a backsplash might open your counter options a bit more (for example, you wouldn't need to worry about quartz scorching behind your cooktop.)

re: installing the range / proximity to the wall: At the risk of sounding cynical, I'd err on the side of following the appliance specifications rather than the word of others who want to sell you something. And maybe talking to customer service for the appliance manufacturer (not retailer.)

All chips can be fixed, however, the inconspicuousness of those repairs vary. Corian and other solid surfaces can be repaired nearly invisibly along with some natural stones. Engineered stone is more difficult and without question, sintered (Dekton) is the most difficult and least conspicuous to repair.

The only way to make sintered more repairable is to purchase a through-body product like Lapitec. The color/movement/particulates go all the way through the top, unlike Dekton which has a picture on the surface. Because of that super-thin picture, it must have mitered 90* edges guaranteed to chip. Not if, but when.

I've seen this type of material used for dramatic effect to cover a wall in a powder room. It's not for counters.
