shower door question
Comments (4)ok, I've just never bought a shower door before, or done a remodel before, and couldn't find any comparable prices on line, and I'm in a small town where nobody has much competition. I'll go talk to my lumberyard today, I hadn't thought about them until this morning. If I knew this guy did great work, but I don't, and somehow writing that big a check to a guy with an air mattress and pillow rolled up in the corner of his office gives me pause....See Moreframeless shower door question
Comments (13)Strictly speaking, "stock size" means different thing for different manufacturers. Also, each fabricator/retailer can choose to "stock" a few most common sizes of glass to be most economical to sell. Glass retailers get their glass from the distributors, who order from glass manufacturers and in a lot instances, from overseas. They ship them in certain "common" size in containers. What I found out is that if you stick to 24", 26", 28", usually you can find it less expensive. Sometimes the height makes a difference too, they usually order from the distributors something like 70" or 72". So say you happen to call to order a 26" x 72" door, they will find they can sell you one pretty easily without any customization effort, that will lead the cheapest price. That said, it's difficult to build your shower solely based on the glass shower door decision. The opening may not be perfectly prime after the tile installation, for example. We are talking about 1/8", 3/16" kind precision. In my case, I have to cut the glass out of square, which make it more expensive. Bottom line, anything they have to do with the glass will incease your cost, you will find the least expensive glass door if they don't have to do any customization to the glass in their shop/warehouse. The less they have to do, the less expensive. Both Wilson Glass or Gasparilla Glass are good online places. I inquired with both myself. Wilson Glass is a tiny little more expensive than Gasparilla's quote. You can even find some rock bottom price ($300~$400) on eBay with whatever the size they are listing at....See MoreShower door question - help needed asap - THANKS!
Comments (2)I'm not a glass person but I will tell you that I had at least 10 - 12 people quote on my shower and I wanted NO drilling into my floor and no headers either. Keep bringing people out. I heard all sorts of stories, one even told me if I did the shower the way I have it right now that the entire ceiling was going to go soggy and fall down. Ok buddy. You will find the right person but it takes lots of patients and lots of time....See MoreShower door question
Comments (4)We had a somewhat similar situation with controls on the shower wall on the right side but hinged there anyway although we were concerned about hitting the controls when the door swings in. (Our shower door swings 90 degrees in each direction---in or out---but I don't know if this is typical). When I enter the shower I pull the door out as this is the most convenient way for me to reach the controls. When I exit I pull the door in because then the water drips inside the shower and not outside on the floor. We have enough room that even when the shower door is pulled in we still have a wide enough opening to move through easily without hitting the controls. I probably would have not hinged this way in a bathroom used by children as they might not be as careful not to hit the controls on the in swing. For us it works, however. HTH....See MoreRelated Professionals
