Need decorating ideas for this family room
Comments (3)You know what, I would move in, place your current furniture and live with it for a bit, then you will have a better idea. We jumped the gun on a couple of rooms in our current home which we moved into 4 years ago, and I wish I'd waited a little bit to get how we use the room, etc. That triangular area doesn't have to have anything on it...it could stand alone as just an architectural detail. We have some of those in our living room, & I've put nothing on them & it looks fine....depends on if you feel the need to decorate up there. I agree with Shannon that I'd put an additional chair, if you use one, on the side opposite the window to balance that area or if that piece housing their tv isn't staying, you could put your longer sofa along that wall, thus opening up the beautiful bay like window & put the chair on that side for reading. Where are you putting your tv...is the large piece staying? You could put your tv above the FP, maybe. If you have wood blinds, you don't really need drapes, unless you want the softness of fabric. I would leave that decision for a bit. Christopher Lowell (from hgtv, etc.) has a book on the seven layers of design & he advises window treatments, accessories, etc. as probably the last step. It is a beautiful room, BTW, and I hope you'll post as you decorate it!! Good luck!...See MoreGood idea to swap my family room with my living rooms?
Comments (10)May I ask just what is a "servery" and what does one do in a "conservatory"? You must not be in the US. It looks to me that the current family room has easier access to the kitchen than does the current dining room. That would be a plus for doing what you want to do. As of the floor plan, it looks entirely doable and it makes sense to reverse the use of the two rooms. It looks to be awkward to carry food service all the way around and down the hall to the current dining area. If you have servants, that might make sense. Since most of don't have any such, it makes sense to have the dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Most people don't even use the more formal dining areas of their homes, except at holidays. The modern sensibility is that most little used areas of that nature just amount to wasted space. So, if you spend more time gathered with friends than gathered around a more formal dining area, make that change....See Moreneed ideas for updating family room
Comments (26)The first thing i would do is to remove the things that are not working…the big lamp by the window…the ottoman..the chair you don’t want …the rug …if you want a change….as it may be overpowering the room and influencing your choices too much….lastly…remove the curtains as they are too formal for the room…then decide how much additional seating you need….with all this done it will be easier to tell ….how big or if a new rug will be needed….and where the additional seating will fit…I would suggest ….to enhance the piano’s presence ….paint the piano wall…a fairly bold accent color….to make it a more modern and interesting feature…the accent color can be selected from whatever color you like in your present or new rug...See MoreWould love some modern area rug ideas and color choices- Family Room
Comments (7)well sounds like you have your colors set then.. you’d asked for color suggestions, but if looking to keep it all neutral then I suppose you will stay in the cream/gray/gold/black scheme that you currently have going. In that case I would definitely work on adding texture to the room with pillows, drapes etc. Not sure if these are more what you had in mind for rugs, but here are a couple neural options I came across...See MoreRelated Professionals
