Adding window to front of home - Input on size/style

last month

Hi! My wife and I are looking to add a window to the front of our home. For some reason, the previous owner build a windowless front exterior. We're working with a general contractor and we'll be consulting with a structural engineer and pulling permits. Anyhow, we could use some help picking out the right window size and style.

Dimensions are as follows:

  • Wall Length: 12ft
  • Wall Height: 8ft
  • Front Door Height: 6ft 8" from floor

House/Room Info:

  • Style of home is ranch, interior is fairly modern and updated
  • Existing windows are double-hung and were installed this year
  • The window will be north facing in Southern California
  • The room where the window goes is our foyer which leads into our living room and kitchen
  • Adding the window to add natural sunlight and curb appeal
  • The home is in a quiet neighborhood, no outside noise or anything worth mentioning that would deter adding a window. No concerns over privacy.

We're thinking:

  • One large window split into 3 sections
  • Going up to 6-8ft in length
  • Matching the top height to the door frame
  • Not sure how high to place the window to make it look proportional (will check with contractor for coding requirements)

All that said, are we on the right track with the size, placement, and style of the window? We’d love feedback or new ideas, especially if you’ve done something similar and it worked out great—or even if you’ve made a mistake we could learn from. Thanks in advance!
