struggling with paint colours!!

Hello. I am struggling with my paint colours.. As you can see in the pictures, we have too many colours of whites/offwhites/cool whites/warm whites. It’s getting overwhelming. The windows and door are brand new installs so I still need to paint the casing and would like to paint the walls as well. Should I paint the casing the same colour as the wall? I feel I need to stick with warm whites because of the popcorn ceiling… but then I also will need to repaint all of the trim upstairs as it is more of a cool white. we won’t be removing the popcorn ceiling anytime soon. Suggestions? Help!!

Since your walls seem to be a warm white, I would paint all trim the same colour as the walls but in a different finish. For example, if your walls are in an eggshell finish, paint the trim in semi-gloss. It is the same paint colour but the finish being different will make it stand out.

Tans/beiges are tough. I have SW Lotus Pod in a room and almost had a heart attack when I started painting because it looked orangey. I had that reaction despite the fact that I had sampled the paint on a large, primed, piece of drywall that I moved around the room. etc. just like everyone recommends. I continued anyway (after the palpitations stopped) and now I don't see it as "orange" at all. Just goes to show that you never know until it's done. In another room I have SW Moderate White. That's nice too but not "tan". Both are definitely more of an off-white. Good luck!

the cabinets have a number of wood grain offerings-I like the bleached or whitewashed oak-and they have a few like that to choose. I would narrow down the type of floor and general look/shade and then go back and zero in on which door front style. So-specifically, I would keep the peninsula and one wall in the same doorstyle and finish-probably one of the light wood grains -not sure if high gloss however-might like to see it-it could be great.Have you taken any door samples to your site-that's important..... I would want a wood product on the floor-engineered or floating or whatever-get a factory finish. Concrete floor doesn't jibe for me-too cold and hard. Does this floor butt to another floor in the living zones beyond kitchen or are you replacing all floors? Why does floor go in first. I think you need samples of floor and door finishes/colors and take them to the place. For me-the look would be a whitewashed/light door style in the wood grain option and probably a wood floor [or wood look]-not matching the cabinet -but contrast in either grain/tone or both to some degree. Counters can wait-there are just so many to choose-get your cabinet door style and have a general idea of floor, then play them against each other and bring a few home and see what happens in the space.

I went through 24 sample pots looking for the perfect shade of blue for my dark kitchen, so i definitley can empathize! Have you considered Benjamin Moore Van Duesen blue. It is a ”light” navy, but I see no purple or Green. Who knows how your light will present it? (BTW, I ended up throwing in the towel on finding the perfect blue, and went with cream instead...) I don’t know if this helps but a coworker of mine bought a house and had the luxury of keeping her apartment for a few months so she wanted to get the new floors and painting done before she moved in. She wanted to repaint EVERY SINGLE SQUARE INCH. (90s Tuscan everywhere) She didn’t have furniture ideas/decor/style or anything decided yet so she had the entire house painted in BM White Dove. Eggshell on walls and satin finish on trim. House is huge but very little natural light if any. There are big windows but her lot has large trees all around it and a lot of natural vegetation that blocks most of the sun. The headline here…SHE HATES IT. It’s looks green in some rooms, then pink in other rooms, and even yellow at times. Every room seems “off” in some way because the paint isn’t right. Unfortunately, she wishes she would have waited until after she furnished everything and learned how the existing finishes looked in the different lighting. This is a new topic for me but this seems like valuable advice that only professionals know. I sadly can’t afford a professional but if I could, I would! I just bought my very first home after planning and saving for a decade! I’m going to learn as much as I can before investing in furniture/ decor etc. GOOD LUCK!

I’m not exactly sure what colour my walls are as this is how they were when we moved in.. but just picking another warm white would be okay right?

The popcorn ceiling looks dirty to me. You can paint it, if you primer it with oil based primer first. I would do that, before thinking about paint.

Are you not planning on also repainting the white walls? If not, it might be difficult to match the exact same white, you'll have to do a few tests to come up with the same colour as the walls for the trim paint.

Okay yea I may as well repaint the walls as well. Thanks. As for the popcorn ceiling I think it has already been painted in the past, so would be difficult to remove so might have to just repaint it at some point.

Sorry - I was not online during the holiday and just saw your post.

Your assessment is correct, you have too many whites, but what I don't want to see is you doing something that you will need to re-do in a few months.

Picking a warm white that is a bit lighter than the walls and is a really flexible white is probably your best bet. Use it for all your doors and trim and later when you do the ceilings you can use it on the ceilings as well

Your selection of wall colors when it is time to paint walls will be less limited than if you pick an off white that matches your current walls.

I would test the following and see which you like best with your current wall color.

Is the casing just primed or is it already painted? If you paint only the casing, the window sashes and mullion, and the door will remain the same neutral (cooler) white.

The window casing is not painted, only primed. I worried about that yes…. Are there different colours of window whites? I didn’t even think of that..

The windows and door appear to comprise a significant portion of the room surface. I'd choose a trim color that either matches the factory sash/mullion/door color or is significantly different. I'd then choose a wall color that coordinates with the trim and sash/mullion/door. I'd paint the ceiling flat white (example).
