Ken I am sure you already know the answer lol! Some will (may) be variegated & some will be green. Let us know the percentages from this fun experiment.

A friend with a massive variegated spider plant had it sitting above a gravel area all summer. The seeds trickled down and sprouted and out of dozens and dozens of seedlings every last one was green! But… you never know, and long story short, yes, theyre probably viable.

Hi there, I've read that it is true you will get all green spider plants from seeds of varigated plants. This is a quote from a web page I've found... "All the variegated Spider Plants are chimeras. The way we usually propagate the Spider Plant is from the baby plants on the stolons, which is an examle of asexual reprodution where there is no gamete fusion. Therefore there is no genetic variation and every new generation consists of genetically identical individuals as the parent generation. This is the reason why you will get all green plants if you breed new plants from the seeds of variegated plants. I've tried that with the two older variegated varieties that I have (White-Striped Spider Plant & Reverse Spider Plant), only getting all green plants. I am planning to do that with the Bonnie variety too, to see if I can get a smaller all green variety! I have had no success yet, though. The only way to get more plants looking the same as the mama plant is to use the baby plants on the stolons." I'll add the link to this web site. I've seen the pods, but never seeds, nor did we ever have spider plants spontaneously springing up under the tables at work (like we had for Impatiens, polka-dot plant, and a few others), which makes me suspect that either they never produce any seeds, or they produce only infertile ones.

Some people in cold climates have problems getting the plant to flower & seed. Plant maturity is probably important in cooler zones, but not as important in warm zones. They flower the first year from offsets &/or seed. I have developed different varieties from seed all with different leaf characteristics Â curly leaf, partially curled leaf, long leaf, & regular leaf. Most are green, but some varieties have a bit of variegation in them. Some with white striping in them result in a very pale green stripe in the progeny. I have grown seeds from C. comosum variety Vittatum, Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', & Chlorophytum comosum ÂBonnie'. There is a need for more work in this area, as the green spiders are brought under the group heading of Chlorophytum comosum. They are all different plants, each with their own characteristics.

just out of curiosity, did you by the momma plant - and can we assume that ist was proagated by meristem culture? just wondering, and yea, my money is on them being mostly green. I always check out stuff growing on the way when I run errands and stuff. and the variegated shrubs tend to revert and loose their white-ish patterns, and I guess it will be similar with seeds

Mine was the variegated type with the white on the leaf edges. The seedlings were/are 100% green. I got rid of the huge plant 2-3 years ago due to all of the seedlings sprouting in the garden up to 30' away from where it hung near the entry. Every month I have to dig up more seedlings that have sprouted. So, way too viable IMO!

Why would you want to mess with seeds? Divide the plant or use on of the offshoots that have roots. I have the variegaed ones with the green on the edges. They are whiter and brigher next to all the other green things around them. Ken, you made me go outside and look at the dried flowers on them. Those itty bitty tiny seeds? Why would you want to mess with those? .

I normally repot them every couple years, root pruning if I don't have friends who want divisions.
