Building a Home Design Dilemma Fireplaces

FIREPLACE DESIGN DILEMMA

This is a 3D rendering of our new build, I initially wanted built-ins and floating shelves, TV on the right, But there is not enough space to do lower built-ins on the right side of the fire place. What are your suggestions? Thoughts on just floating shelves?

How big is the room?

Do you want to waste space on that wrap around seat/hearth? I would get rid of that and lower the firebox. TV looks crammed and placed too high.

Holly are you saying i have to replace all of the crown in the kitchen? I am not trying to save anything between the 2 windows where the range area is currently. I am ok with the expense and have already gotten the quotes from the cab company and for the modernaire hood insert. But for the cost I want to be sure want to be sure about not using the vv96 in that area and the staggered cabs. I know what I have is really nice, it is just not what I want.

I would remove the existing pillars and mantel, they look too crowded against the windows. I would install a clean and simple modern tile around the fireplace. I think you could pull off the TV mounted once you get the pillars and mantel out, install a lower ledge to help protect the TV from the heat of the working fireplace. Lowering the ledge/mantel and with today's TV mounts should allow the TV to be positioned easier for viewing. Do your research on TV mounts, most of todays TV's are super light but block for it in the wall if necessary, particularly if you think you will be moving t he arm mount around often. You will get your depth from the TV and the ledge mantel so dont worry about creating more with trims and moldings. Best of luck!

I don't care for either one of these mirrors against the stone. Unless they reflected a fabulous view or chandelier I wouldn't do that. I would try to come up with something unexpected. We don't know your style, so it is hard to suggest the right idea. This ladder vignette made me think of a big antique ladder with some interesting tapestries folded and hung over a few of the rungs. Here's a variation on the horse idea.

It seems placement could work centered or offset, but without the sconces only. According to your sketch, the sconce is too close to the hall. If the artwork is offset from the table, you have the balance and massing from the sideboard, so picture yourself sitting in the family room. First, you probably won't view the art perfectly associated to the center of the table. Then, if you see the artwork not centered on table/chandelier, that may be ok because the visual breakup with the sideboard may balance the entire view. And you've drawn like a long 6'+ piece, so it may conflict with that 4-gang switch box there anyway. But, I would probably just eliminate the sconces as IMO it detracts from the art anyway, and limits you in flexiblity for a different sized piece in the future. Then you can play with a centered or offset location upon hanging. I think either could work. Same logic I would apply to the sideboard, whether it can be centered or offset from the table.

First of course no room for builtins with thta huge hearth why that at all . IMO if the tV was planned to go in this space the FP off set would have been a better choice too.IN fact i don't like anything about that FP so please a lot more info as to how far along the build is .Flaoting shelves to use for what ? In my experience those shelves end up being a huge issue to style with often cheap stuff you got at Home Goods .I actually do new builds with the FP in the LR and the TV in a FR so there is none of this needed but of course depends on the plan.

If interested/possible at this point, maybe rethink the design if the rendition is reflective. Hearth is too high visually and if removed, mantle is lower (or don’t add one), then tv could be placed there. Stone is very dark and might overpower room given its height. With hearth gone, your options for the sides increase and creating balance on such a prominent wall is important. Maybe look on line for ideas that resonate with your design plans and needs.
