Thanksgiving Travel

The news today said that 2.9 million people will be travelling by air (I suppose they mean in US, they didn’t specify, I don’t think, and whether it is over the span of Wed. through Sunday or?)

Many will drive.

I will only be going a short distance and not on prime day.

To all of you travelling, have an enjoyable and safe trip. I wish everyone celebrating a wonderful day, whether you are solo or with a group.

Thank you Petalique! I hope your travels are safe and your holiday is wonderful.

We will be traveling to my DD's. She lives in NW Oklahoma, where there is no traffic except for big green tractors. And it's only about a 2 hour drive.

May we all remember what the meaning of this holiday is -- being Thankful for the blessings we have!

i'm hosting this year so no traveling for me. we are gathering at 11 a.m. so that nobody has to drive home in the dark. there is a crazy number of deer running now since firearm hunting was last weekend for 4 days.

We're starting to view our weekend farm in Galien, Michigan as our "home" just as much as our townhouse on the South Side of Chicago, at least when the snow is less than a foot thick. We'll drive out there Wednesday night and then on Thursday it won't be much travel to the neighboring house. But it's 600 feet down our drive to the road, and then up a steep drive to the neighbor's, and there will be a lot of vehicles there, so we may end up pulling a food-laden wagon. Otherwise things can get difficult trying to extract our pickup when it's time to go home. Our next-door neighbor in Michigan, who used to be a weekend resident like us, is now living in the country more or less full time while running in to Chicago during the week as needed to meet with his arhitecture clients or visit job sites. He'll be having a full house -- one of his brothers, one of his sisters, assorted artists and other acquaintences with and without partners, maybe 12-13 in all. My neighbor and I like one another's cooking and pretty much swap eating at each other's place on Saturday nights. For this bash, he and I will both be cooking turkey and stuffing; he wants me to do the mashed potatoes; he'll do sweet potatoes; a guest is bringing something involving Brussel sprouts and Grueyre cheese; Roberta will make our traditional cranberry sherbet. And over the weekend it developed that one of the artists, who was bringing several deserts, decided to make one of them a tres leches cake instead of pumpkin pie. My neighbor wasn't thrilled at the prospect of Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie so I volunteered to do that, too. I'm hoping there will be lots of leftover turkey. My neighbor is thinking about mole' or maybe curry to feed his guests, several of whom will be staying over for three days, and on Friday, my son will drive out to Galien, along with the Three Graces -- his wife and her two sisters. They're flying in from New Mexico and spending Thursday with his in-laws in a Chicago suburb. If too much turkey is eaten next door on Thursday, maybe we'll make pizza.

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving. We traveled down to the Stephenville, TX, area for Turkey Day, where our extended family had the largest Thanksgiving gathering we'd had in several years, including 3 new babies born into the family since last Thanksgiving. It was fun and since the weather was so gorgeous, the older children got to run around and play outside all afternoon. The only downside to having Thanksgiving at someone else's house is that you don't have leftovers. I'm thinking about cooking a turkey and dressing tomorrow because I do like it, and don't mind having turkey leftovers for a few days. Larry, It is my most favorite holiday too. We had only Texans and Okies at our gathering though, so not nearly as diverse of a group as yours. I remember looking around the living room/dining room at one point and thinking just how grateful I was that we all are still here and were together for the holiday. I avoided all the Black Friday shopping nonsense too, which is one more thing for which to be grateful! Dawn

We are in a cabin in the woods in the Shenandoah valley in VA. Kids are here and grandbaby. The kitchen is great and I have a huge island . I am lucky. Here is a pic of the kitchen. So far I have made roasted pumpkin/butternut squash soup with an applejuice reduction to flavor the yogurt for the topping and roasted the seeds. Also roasted beets with feta and pecans for the salad. We will have a spatchcocked roasted turkey and mashed potatoes...I cooked the giblets/neck the other day for the gravy. Brussels sprouts that have been separated into leaves and stir fried. I made buttermilk dinner rolls yesterday and for dessert a quince/apple crumble with brandied raisins and whipped cream. Not bad for being out of town and in the woods :) Here is a view out over the mountain:

We'll be there for the whole weekend and at least the day before. That's why I want to bring food, since it's quite something to feed a crew for a whole weekend. Mostly oldsters, and I mean REALLY old, my 'rents are in their 80's and my uncle is 89. His wife is 70ish. My cousin and her grown kids and their babies might show up. Anyway, I was just asking about holiday travel foods in general, not my specific case. Unfortuantely, that mulled wine, my "go to" hostess gift, is out since the oldsters can't drink I think due to medications. Last year I brought what I thought was the perfect hostess gift--wine to a family of winos. But they had so much wine already they never opened mine. Farm fresh apples and cider were appreciated though. I'll bring that this time, and probably some homeade bread and jam. Shortbread savory cookies would be a good thing to have on hand over the weekend but I can't eat them and dad and his brother both have cholesterol issues. Perfect for my diabetic mom though! :) Oh yeah, and I have to deal with my dad, the pickiest eater on the planet. Maybe some spiced mixed nuts, that might be good. Anyway, what foodie gifts do you like?? I made apricot thyme liqueur this year thinking it would be good for gifts but it just isn't good. Wishing safe and trouble-free travels to all. I'm opting to stay home and skip the traffic. On a holiday, it often takes me 2-1/2 hours to travel the 50 miles between my friend's house and mine. Although I love the fun of Friendsgiving there, it's not enough to overcome the dread of the trip this year.

We're in the middle of a snow storm. I'm supposed to pick up a Rose Obelisk across town. I had to reschedule to pick it up Friday!... driving across town is life threatening! 🐧🦃

No travel for us - actually no 'traditional' Thanksgiving this year, either. I love all the foods and usually do a mini version for the two of us but it's a lot of work to make all that food for a bite or two of everything! So this year I'm making stew and salad. harrumph. Kids and grands are arriving 12/24 for 2 weeks so there will be LOTS of cooking going on then. Praying for quiet weather across the country at that time - they are flying WA to NC!

DH and I flew to Michigan last Sunday to spend Thanksgiving Week here with my 7 siblings. LOTS of families with toddlers and babies flying then, though! We are having such a wonderful but a bit exhausting time. We’re flying home this Saturday morning, though, in hopes of avoiding some of the crowds.

DLM, that's how I feel too. I think I mentioned before that I usually cook a mini version of a full TG dinner for just me or sometimes take a plate to my elderly aunt. Not feeling it this year. I know I'll regret it tho, so I've made plans to go to Bob Evans tomorrow for a TG take-out dinner. That is - if there isn't too much snow. I'll have to call my aunt to see if she wants one too or if her daughter-in-law or grandkids will be bringing her a plate later. At 94, she doesn't like to travel for the holiday meals anymore.

I've noticed this year that the majority of people are acting, well - happy. Lots of smiles to each other, small talk, courteous. Good Thanksgiving to all. Be safe.

ETA: Oh, I did buy a pumpkin pie yesterday!

A quiet Thanksgiving for us this year. DD, DH and I are going out to one of our local restaurants for our main mid-day meal. All our family is rather scattered this year for various reasons and I was not up to a long week of cleaning and cooking anyway so this works for us. We’ll celebrate with everyone at Christmas. Our grandkids are scattered, oldest one’s wife is very pregnant, one is exhausted from work and wasn’t up to the drive (i do not blame her one bit) one SIL just lost her Dad to cancer, and one DIL’s mother is going thru chemo. I sort of miss the good food, but not all the work and cleanup.

DBF’s mom is cooking so we’ll go over there and take sweet potato casserole and a caprese salad. They’re just across town and we‘re not expecting any bad weather here. Doggo will stay with them while DBF and I then decamp to Carlsbad for the weekend. Any travel we’ve done this year was associated with my dad’s illness and death, and I’ve been in a demanding interim role at work since April, so this is the first chance we’ve had to try to get away and relax. We’ll do the boat ride on the Pecos and see the caverns. Nothing fancy, but a nice respite, I hope.

I'm working tomorrow during the day. It's fine with me as my kids are scattered to the winds this year. We'll be together for Christmas. Meanwhile, I roasted a turkey today because Thanksgiving is all about turkey sandwiches.
