Electric/Induction Cooktop - Black

Hi! Any recommendations on a black frameless induction cooktop? I'm looking at both Cafe brand and Bosch but both don't have great reviews. I guess with each brand there are pros and cons. I know Samsung also has some but I don't think they are frameless. I found a Miele at a really good price but I believe it is final sale. If anyone has a recommendation of a brand they love and have great experience with, please share.

I am currently remodeling my kitchen and doing all black appliances as well as cabinetry and countertops. I am also looking for a black workstation sink.

Miele is a good product. They are opening a US production facility by the end of this year.

220/240 circuit, separate circuit breaker. There's probably 110/120 there now, for the gas igniter. Check the amperage of the wiring as well as the amperage requirements for the cooktops you are considering; often you will need 40-50 amps, while standard 110 is usually 20-30 amps. 110/120 with its own circuit can usually be switched to 220/240, but if the wire is too small (amperage) then you'll need new wire installed. Also, some cooktops are hard-wired & others use a Hubble rather than a conventional plug--check this out before you have the wiring work done. I highly recommend induction, with the highest wattage you can find for your budget & space. If you are nervous about induction or have great pans that won't work on induction, get a combo unit that has some induction & some electric burners.

Hollysprings - While I can't speak to any correlation between price and performance,your post seems to imply that all radiant cooktops perform the same. If I've read that correctly, you are simply wrong on this one. Take it from someone who used one practically daily for a dozen years before switching to a new one. Forget the 13" problem I noted above, that's my fault for not thinking about that in the showroom. I'm talking about simmer capability (or lack thereof), response time (my new one seems to hold heat a lot longer, making response time slower), and cleanability. Induction of course is superior to radiant in many ways, but to suggest that radiant "limps along" is overdramatic and again subject to the particular appliance. I know my Frigidaire was only about 30 seconds behind published one gallon boil tests for the 23K gas CC which tells me it would have probably blown away most gas ranges out there. Simmer, well like I said no problem on that cooktop, yet many threads about the CC and BS, among others. Cleaning, well that's subjective but suffice it to say that after a boilover I found a quick scrape with a razor blade then a clean and polish with a quality cleaner took under five minutes. And I'm talking clean, no "patina" excuses. Now I won't make the same claims about my Bosch. Because all radiant is NOT created equal.

It's a regular Ceran cooktop with 5 hobs, including a "12 inch triple heating element" and features like True Simmer and a Melt setting, using "high-frequency pulsation." The ad refers to it as "high performance." My syndicated copy doesn't have a Thermador ad, nycbluedevil. I'm assuming you get the NYC version of the paper? Interesting that ads for national brands would be different. Since it was the food and drink issue, it makes sense that there would be kitchen ads.

Larsi - I am not in total agreement on the buzzing. I do have some low level buzzing but harder to hear with the fan engaged. I have all top end (various brands). All Clad, DeMeyere, CIA, LeCr, Staub, ScanPan and probably a few other brands hiding in my drawers and Super Susan. I only have one of each size - just a number of different brands that I picked up over the years.(OK - I might have more than one 2.5qt pan) Lexi - I wouldn't be overly concerned but if you can try it out to make sure it won't bother you too much. I am very noise sensitive and am OK with it. The benefits outweigh this issue. Also- gas makes noise as well - just different noises. I don't think my coil electric ever made noise. I fortunately avoided the ceramic electric non-induction phase. Of note - I seem to have a defective LED light. When it is on, the buzzing is amplified. I need to replace it but in the mean time, I tend to turn off the big lights and use the cooktop light to minimize the effect. I had Wolf come look at my cooktop early on and it the buzzing wasn't bad when they came - but alas, it took me two years to figure out the root cause. When Wolf came to fix my oven, I gave a demonstration so they would know I wasn't totally nuts when I complained about the sound. LOL

I have a Bosch - no problems though I had a little trouble getting used to the controls where you have to select the hob and then adjust the level. I have an induction range at a different house that isn't like that and I would have preferred separate controls but Bosch seemed to be the best option for me so I went with it. When I did my research earlier this year it seemed like the highest quality/reliabilty choice so surprised you're seeing something different.

We have a Bosch and love it. One warning with the frameless: the exposed glass edge is subject to damage from a slippery pot or similar. I haven't looked at a framed version, but there's a gap below the edge of the glass that's difficult to clean.

Thats good to know! i will opt for the trim then. I am just having a hard time finding a black trim vs. stainless steel. I would rather habe a satinless steel trim then pesky food debris though.

The reviews I read about Bosch wre on Home Depot’s website if I recall correctly. Either way, Bosch seems to be a great choice and many here agree. Those with Bosch, did you go with a complementary wall oven?

I am still considering Cafe Appliances because I do like the look of their appliances - however I dont know much about the quality other than they are owned by GE and my family has them with mo complaints (they have refrigerators and gas ranges).

My ca. 2015 Frigidaire Gallery is black, frameless, and still operating well. There is a small chip on a corner that occurred at some point.

This past year we replaced a 20 yo Wolf gas cooktop with a Bosch Benchmark (no trim) induction, and a Dacor wall oven with a Cafe. Enjoy them both.

I have Whirlpool, bought in 2014 and it is great! No problems at all, easy to clean, options, including "boost" feature which gets the water boiling in no time.

I also have the Whirlpool electric oven, again no problems.

Regarding Cafe...I have it and while I like it overall, I do occasionally have issues with the controls. You cannot easily change in small increments.

Before selecting a Bosch induction cooktop, read the user guide and make sure you'll be happy with the control design. There's a single control for the power level so, if you're cooking on more than one induction element, you must first select the element and then adjust the power level.

Note that the GE Profile PHP9036DTBB, Cafe CHP90361TBB, and Monogram ZHU36RDTBB are all basically the same so you can save some money with the Profile.

Prefer physical knobs? Consider the bargain-priced Frigidaire FPIC3677RF or FPIC3077RF.

We have had 36” Bosch Benchmark trimless induction cooktops in two kitchens. Both have been great. We had each installed on (as opposed to in) our soapstone counters - cleaning around the edges has been no problem. I am the cook in our family and I love induction for cooking, but I think my husband (who cleans up) loves it even more for how much easier it is to clean than any of the gas stoves we’d had over the years. He says it takes literally a quarter of the time.

Ikea has a 5 year appliance warranty. They started in the US with Whirlpool. The company that gave us the one year warranty. Ikea has dropped everything Whirlpool. Electrolux now supplies their appliances.

Our twelve-year old Thermador induction cooktop is made by Bosch. Used daily, it has not yet (knock on wood!) had any problems. It is frameless, which I wasn't sure I would like, but it's really not a problem. The glass sits 1/8" above the countertop, so a brush or vacuum can easily clear out any crumbs. The controls are similar to the ones I see on the Bosch website and we senior citizens did well with the learning curve. ;-)

We chose it over other brands because the largest hob is placed in the back. I have no desire to have to reach over a large skillet or boiling pot of water to stir something in a smaller hob behind it.
