Design Dilemma Remodeling Exterior

We are looking to give our home an exterior refresh. We would like to remove the stucco and install siding. Something like hardie board or lp smart siding. We are going to replace the windows and doors as well.

We are having trouble deciding on what to do for colours. We would like to keep the soffit and fascia white. We are thinking black windows with maybe white board and batten siding. But we would like to do an accent colour somewhere or maybe add wood somewhere as well.

Any ideas would be much appreciated thanks!

Change the color on all the metal railings to black.

Maybe consider painting the stucco.

I would keep the stucco. Your house is nice looking as it is. Change the color, if its color you dont like. Put in your new black windows, and paint the railing black. Add some better plantings in the planters, and some colorful pots by the garage doors with flowers in them. Right now, it is a bit blah, and it needs some added interest.

Even my husband who is not architecturally educated can identify a Modern Farmhouse style house. It's such a specific style that as @cpartist says, it will end up being dated sooner rather than later. Mass produced subdivision colonials may not be special, but they are in a sense timeless in that millions of them have been built and millions of people happily live in them. A black metal roof strikes me as being very impractical. How long are you planning on living in this home? Anytime you make a non-standard design choice you risk alienating a large segment of buyers. Also, in order to completely execute the MF look you would have to replace your windows with black ones. The trim around the front door can be changed to something less colonial and maybe since you're going to have a builder putting on an addition you could add a covered front porch. I hope you're using an architect for your addition. If so, ask them to spec out a front porch. Then you can side the house in a different color. Maybe DH would compromise on the roof (medium gray shingles are the most popular and versatile roofing choice) if you did white siding. Keep the black shutters - they add interest. You would then have a lot of choices for a front door color, or just use black if that's what DH likes. Good luck - it's always hard to get two people to agree on everything. :-)

Back of home, during construction. There will be another deck between the white siding and sunroom windows. Under the deck will be closed in and made into a shed. We'll need to decide what kind of siding and what colors we'll use for that.

Not blinding white because then it looks like you were trying for Modern Farmhouse and missed. A window like this wouldn't be found on a Modern Farmhouse home. I like the current color except it doesn't look like it goes with the brick on the chimney. Is there a color that would work with both the chimney and the roof? Since the picture doesn't show the chimney well, all I can tell is that is looks more beige than gray. Maybe one of SW's grays: Agreeable, Worldly, Modern, etc. would be a good compromise light to medium warm gray?

You have a beautiful woodland setting, and I hope it will keep that character. Manicured suburbia is much less interesting than what nature does! I would work with the land rather than trying to make it something it's not. (Makes for easier maintenance, too.) Fallen leaves, for example, are the trees' annual gift of renewed fertility to the soil as they break down. They can stay in the woods with no problem. If I want a neater look, I run the mower over them to chop them up and then blow them back under the trees. (I always wish I had more! They're great mulch, but they don't last all season.) In keeping with the natural approach, I also like a softer look to the house than stark black and white, but that's me.

Black and white I dont feel fits this house, When did the brick get painted? Id explore some more options with design first, Are you removing that brick? Have you thought about landscape? What is above the garage?

My money would be spent redoing the hardscaping. A wide walkway to the street....a porch...planting beds...

You already have the brick as an accent. There's no logical place for wood. You're not going to change this into anything that looks close to a modern farmhouse or a contemporary, so I'd give up on that. Go looking for insp pics among houses that look more like yours.

If you want black and white, something like this (note the creamy white, which you need with your brick, not a stark white)

There is nothing above the garage. Just high ceilings in the garage then attic space. It’s unfortunate with the height that they didn’t do living space when the house was built in 1994.

Also the stone hasn’t been painted. It’s called Tyndall stone.

Ya, I agree especially now seeing that mock up. it looks forced black and white but I do like the pergola trim. Landscape would bring so much.

After Seeing the white and black I don’t think that’s the look we are going for. Maybe we just do black windows and new garage doors white of black?. Not sure if we should paint the stucco. I would like to get rid of the big forehead look of the garage. I’ll also have to look into landscaping.

On this house, windows with divided lights, such as Sigrid and Lisedv showed, look much more appropriate than what you have now. It's a more traditional looking house in general. I wonder if there is a way to add a window above the garage to reduce that look that you don't like. But I would be cautious about adding windows in a very contrasting color, like black or dark brown, unless the frames are rather thin. If they still make that color, I think Marvin casement windows in "Pebble Grey" would look great with this house.

Also, is there something wrong with the stucco, other than perhaps the color?

Better landscaping is the biggest need I see.

There isn’t really anything wrong with the stucco. I guess we just don’t know how to update the exterior with the existing colour. Maybe doing black windows would be too much contrast for this colour. Maybe we should be looking at tying everything together better.

Here's with leaving the stucco as is and replacing windows with black. I think the black garage doors look better than white ones with the black windows.
