Does bubble wrap / pool cover block sunlight?
Comments (11)themaniam1 Actually, that's exactly how our GH is set up. Double poly inflated with 3 layers of 1/2" bubble wrap sandwiched between the poly. Works a treat. Sure, there's some light loss, but like wyndyacre stated, the tradeoff is worth it. We are able to keep the GH nice and toasty on the coldest nights and as for light, well, the plants sure don't seem to mind a little light loss. The banana trees are growing, the palms putting on new fronds, plants are flowering, etc. But, only for simplicity, I think we're going to the clear pool covers for next year. A local supplier can supply 12'X24' sheets for only $55 CAN$ and the plastic they use is 11 mil. We'll either buy 2 sheets or perhaps 3, depending on light loss and insulating value. We tried 5 layers last year, but there was too much light loss, to the point where the GH wouldn't heat up during the day very much. We had 3 the year before and have gone back to 3 this year. It's working out well....See MoreAllow Sunlight thru a Chain Link fence (but conceal)?
Comments (12)If you are willing/able to run a drip line up there, than doing a vertical garden with epiphytes such as bromeliads is very doable, and you could use Tillandsia species that need no soil, or could use other types of bromeliads in small half baskets attached to the fence. Tillandsia somnians is a nice one that sends out long arching flowering spikes that then form plantlets after it blooms. Rhipsalis species, orchids such as Epidendrums and mini-cymbidiums could also work well, or succulents in hanging baskets such as Sedum morganianum, Gratopetalum paraguayense, Sedum palmeri, etc. All of these plants are of the type that will tend to cascade, or form clumps rather than gain in height and mass, so won't block your sun....See MoreFloor Plan Comments - Natural Light
Comments (14)Thanks for the comments so far. There does not appear to be a consensus, but several folks have recommended Solatubes. I guess I could put in two 14" Solatubes in the Family room by putting them in the centers of two coffers at one-third and two-thirds of the way along the length of the room. But would these point sources of skylight be too bright, like really bright light fixtures that make you want to wear a baseball cap to shield your eyes from the glare? I guess we could build the house as-is, and add the Solatubes later if we decide we want more light. Have also thought about long linear skylights at the boundaries of the kitchen/family rooms, dining/family rooms, and entry/family rooms. In response to a few questions, the porch roof will be about 15' high. I like the suggestion about making the patio and underside of porch roof light colors. That may help some. Per requests, I have also attached sketch for second floor, which contains a guest bedroom, study, exercise room, and two baths. Any more opinions welcome. Thanks....See Moreglass block wall/other natural light source?
Comments (4)Sorry everyone - didn't explain myself very well. The opening we are talking about is a former window to the outside that has been enclosed when a former porch was enclosed and our office was added to that exterior space. So the only real option is to re-open that old window above what will likely be over the sink in our relocated kitchen. That potential opening looks directly into our home office where I regularly work from home, so I do not want it to be a real opening or an opening that provides for a clear view. Maybe the best option is to just put in a high transom where some light gets in but no one can see through. Any other ideas?...See MoreRelated Professionals
