Comments (45)The prep is the worst! I cannot drink anything I don't like the taste of so I put off doing it for years because I knew I would not be able to get that drink down. But, like others, colon cancer runs in my family. Doctor gave me pills to take. It's a LOT of pills but to me better than the drink. The actual procedure was nothing. I usually have a hard time coming out of anesthesia. I'm usually very groggy for an extended period, but I actually woke up feeling amazingly refreshed after the colonoscopy. Like I had the best night of sleep ever. Hubby took me out to my favorite brunch place after and it was the most delicious meal I ever had! My brother had colon cancer last year. He's finished with treatment and got a clean colonoscopy recently. Whew! Because of family history, I was told I need one every 3 years. I think I'm due again next year, or maybe 2026. Can't remember. The saddest story is my daughter's friend from high school just passed away a few weeks ago from colon cancer. He was 37!! It was stage 4 when he was diagnosed. So awful. My brother (a retired doc) told me that they're diagnosing it in people younger and younger and the age to start getting colonoscopies is coming down. Scary stuff....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/11/2024
Comments (11)Glad you are back, Funky! I've had a super busy week so I am on the treadmill to get to 10,000 steps. I did Pilates today. This is such a weird week before classes because we have a lot of meetings and there are a lot of last-minute student issues we need to work on. Students wanting to change their major or do an internship without ever talking to anyone about it, or need help building their schedule which they should've done months ago. I am beat! Little girl kitty had her radioactive treatment for hyperthyroid the other day, so it has been an adventure since. We are just not sleeping well worried about her. She did great but hated the 45-minute car ride home. Now we must keep her and Blue separated. She can only be on our laps 10 min per day or be next to Blue max of 10 min, and we need to have them not share bowls or litterbox until the 26th. I also have to use a litterbox liner and change them out every other day which I did today. Wear gloves and then immediately wash hands after scooping. Another guy who was picking up his cat at the same time said he has a room above the garage and the cat will have to stay there, but we do not have that luxury. Last night we put Blue in the guest BR and let Panda have run of the house while we closed the BR door. Panda is more likely to cry than Blue. Healthy eating schedule and exercise are a little off, but hopefully once things settle in, I will be OK. I did make it to Pilates group sessions twice this week but couldn't due the private session because we had to drive to the vets on Wednesday. I am still tracking. Have a good weekend everyone. It is a little cooler and less humid so it feels so much better. Looking forward to morning step aerobics....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/3/2024
Comments (13)Feathers, so glad that you could spend some time with your sister and helping out in her household. I am sure what was most special was being there to provide support as she navigates this phase of her treatment -- I wish you both all the very best! And thank you for the recommendation of the meditation apps. I have previously dismissed them-- not because I don't believe in meditation (I DO!) but when I get worked up, I become pretty singularly minded and am not in a state that is conducive to meditation. Not sure that is fair or true-- I've never given it a chance-- but this is not my normal type of sleep issue. I usually struggle to fall asleep but am fine once I do. This time it is waking up in the middle of a normal sleep cycle (surprisingly, I am doing much better with falling asleep). While it was odd behave to wake up at 2am and work, I feel good about my progress so there is that. It has totally mucked up my day though .. .i am very likely going back for a second nap this afternoon. Sue, so sorry to hear you have issues with your shoulder. I hope it is not a rotator cuff injury. Not that bursitis or frozen shoulder are fun to deal with, at least they do not to require surgery (to the best of my completely uneducated knowledge!). I had a terrible time with frozen shoulder --twice/once in each shoulder. I also have a lonnnng history of bursitis (all the way back to elementary school -- which is highly unusual). Both caused pain that went down my arm. If you can take aspirin-- literally aspirin vs tylenol etc-- I recommend giving that a try in advance of your dr appt. It is what my ortho suggests and the *only* thing that helps when my bursitis kicks in. You may not have bursitis but it isnt going to hurt anything to give it a try. For me, it gives pretty relief that increases with time and doses. I have another suggestion for frozen shoulder that I will share if you get a dx. It seems harmless to me but I'd be concerned that it might cause more damage if you have a rotator cuff injury. Hope you get some good answers from the dr! In the meantime, enjoy your beautiful walks with Bugs!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/10/2024
Comments (13)Speaking of years, I got bloodwork results last week, and my thyroid is way off. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in my 20s, and my medication has been mostly consistent since then. Last year, my doctor lowered the dosage, and now my levels are out of whack again. But I am grateful for that diagnosis years ago, because without it, I probably would not have had any consistent bloodwork done during my adult life. It has made me more in tune with my health, for sure. Funky, perhaps a few sessions with a personal trainer would be helpful in identifying useful strength training exercises. I know the knowledge and expertise of trainers can vary, but there are a few in my area who have great reputations among women our age. I have considered one, too, because I'm in a rut with my exercise. Your holding pattern is success, though, and I still insist it's progress! I'm heading into this holiday season expecting more socializing than usual... my goal is a holding pattern. Legomom, thanks for sharing your inspiration, too. The phrase "body composition" keeps coming up in terms of women our age who don't necessarily lose weight, but whose bodies change due to healthier habits. I think you're definitely in this category. Yes to more cold-weather cooking. Earlier this week, I made a butternut squash soup with added ground pork to for protein. But I still need to maintain my vegetable intake, so my focus will be on winter salads that incorporate more fall-flavored dressing. This can simply mean more apple cider based, rather than citrus based....See MoreRelated Professionals
