Top Cream disappointment

I really love the fragrance and color of this Rose and it was in my top three, but since my bare root purchase early 2024, it put out three blooms and then completely stopped growing. Granted we had a major Heatwave all summer so I excuse no roses-- but no growth?
I gave it a prime spot but I'm going to put it in a pot and give that spot to a rose that wants to participate more.
Is it happy for anyone else?

Carla, that’s so dissapointing. For me it was a toss up between growing Top Cream ir Easy Spirit. I went with Easy Spirit because it seemed to he a shorter rose. It turned out to be a great choice because even in our heat it kept producing these huge perfect blooms. If you decide that you esnt something like Top Cream, Easy Spirit is a good choice.

Try giving it more time, maybe it was focusing on getting their roots established and will impress you next year. First year sleep, then creep, then leap as they say

Amanzed, I don't know about pore size...that could very well be true. I did a couple of experiments with water absorption of Napa vs. perlite (I guess that should be aDsorption?) and the Napa took up about twice as much water as Perlite, either pure Napa or mixed 50/50 with soil. I didn't try pumice. I'm guessing that one important factor is how long the substrate is exposed to water. I always water my plants twice, so the soil is thoroughly saturated. Since many of my plants are shrubby Euphorbias, more from arid to semi-arid forests rather than anything resembling desert conditions, my guess is that they enjoy the slow release of moisture. I get where you're going with the "systemic" thing, but I wash the 8822 thoroughly. Having said that, other than some mealy bugs before I started using 8822, I've never had any insect pests on my Euphorbias. That's the least of my worries :) -R

Pat, I asked around the office today and the only DQ here in the Tulsa Metro is a combo with Orange Julious(sp) in the big mall. I don't do the big mall very often and I think it's a new thing. I've had some good times out at Keystone back in the day. One of my sales reps lives in Mannford, same area as Cleveland and she said no DQ's to be found. There are some in other smaller towns around the state though. There is a chance I might be in Dustin sometime in the next year or so. A friend has an Aunt who owns a rental on the beach that we would like to go to and chill out for a long weekend. Not sure how far you are from there but if you are close we will have to get together. It would be great to meet you and have a drink or a DQ! David

Disappointed in Cuisinart IceCream maker.. what did I do wrong?

Do you have a freezer thermometer? If not, you should get one to find out exactly what temperature your freezer is. It must get down to 0Â°F in order for the ice cream maker to work. As also said above, if the room temperature is too high, it will take longer. I've noticed that if people open the freezer too often, it causes the freezer temperature to rise, and so I'm very happy now that I have an ice dispenser in the door so that my freezer door is very seldom open now. If the door does get opened, it should be closed as quickly as possible - it is very bad to stand browsing with the freezer door open - I won't tolerate that. Also, when you are getting something out of the freezer, you should get it out as quickly as possible and close the door as quickly as possible in order to keep the temperature down. This is more critical on older freezers, but it will also save you energy on the newer ones. How old is your freezer? Are you able to measure the temperature? Lars

Top Cream has been just OK for me as well. Not bad, but a moderate bloomer with moderate growth. Some people compare it to Bolero, but I think Bolero is an extraordinary floribunda, TC just a mediocre HT. I do think the fragrance is interesting, has some nice herbal notes, so I’ll keep it around.

Ben, My experience is just opposite. Top Cream is a great performer , very healthy and blooms heavily. Though I don’t like its scent too much. We have hot summer but probably not as bas as Carla’s. Bolero has magnificant fragrance to my nose but that is totally subjective. I tend to like the old sweet rose scent better. But Bolero has grown slowly and bloomed much less. Granted it was a small band in its first year only.
