Comments (2)If you are mechanically inclined and enjoy doing it, you can get the parts and repair it, though the motor may also be shot. Most people will just replace the pump. If the impellers and the housing are both damaged, a new pump will be cheaper than repairs. If you are actually lifting the water 30 feet, you will need a deep well pump. Otherwise a shallow well pump will work fine if the lift to the pump is under about 22-25 feet. Hard to say just what happened, but quite likely water was left running somewhere and exceeded the well's capacity and ran the well dry, then the pump continued to run until it seized. If your pump is above ground, then there will be nothing down the well. Just a foot valve at the end of the intake water line in the well. You will want to check everything out and find out if you have a water leak somewhere or if a faucet was left on. There could also be an air leak on the intake side that caused the pump to lose its prime. If you use the water for household use and not for landscape watering, check out your actual pumping needs. A 1/2 or 3/4 hp pump may be quite sufficient. Using an oversized pump for your needs will shorten the life of the pump, so check out that you have the correct size for your pumping needs. 3 gpm. is generally sufficient for household use and 7 gpm is sufficient for yard watering through a hose. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, then you need to make sure the pump has the capacity to fill the needs of the sprinkler system. An oversized pump is also more likely to pump the well dry if it has limited flow. If your pump is away from the house where you can't hear if it is running or not, I would advise replacing the pressure switch that comes with your next pump with a low pressure cut off switch (costs about $25). It looks and works the same, only it will shut the pump down if the pressure gets under about 10psi. This prevents the pump from running dry and burning out. These switches have saved me from buying 3 or 4 new pumps in the last few years....See Morerunning sprinkler pump and jet pump on same well
Comments (8)J, Thanks for the added info. An observation and some more questions. The set up you describe is normally with a backflow preventer or a foot valve both work to keep water in the lines so the pump doesn't have to work to refill the lines. The pressure tank is usually to provide a stable range of pressure for the varied off and on demand of house usage. The pump fills the tank when the minimum pressure is reached as water and pressure are used up from the house. Questions: 1. Is the tank just for treating the sulfur or is also to provide enough storage and pressure so the pump is not cycling off and on frequently? 2. The pressure in the tank regulates the pressure in the house. What pressure limits is your tank set at? example is the pump come on when pressure in the tank drops to 40 psi and runs until pressure rises to 70 psi then turns off. 3. The pumps direct pressure to the tank may be higher than the upper limit of the tank to provide a quicker fill. To design your irrigation system you have to decide to take water off before or after the tank. Which is easier to do and less expensive for you? 4. Do you know the pumps pressure and flow rating? 5. Did you have someone install your well and pump? We are getting to the bottom of this, I promise. Aloha...See MorePowerwashing With Well Water Pump...
Comments (13)There was a time when I would have stood toe to toe with all of you guys and argue that reducing the load would only reduce the amp draw, however I learned the hard way. In addition to plumbing we do HVAC and on all of our HVAC service trucks we were carrying four AC condenser fan motors which were Marathon Motor co 230v 1075rpm CW & CCW Rot NEMA type 42 frames in 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 & 1/2HP and which we were paying exactly the same price for all of them on our wholesale. One day we were discussing ways to reduce our inventory and someone suggested that if you reduce the mechanical load on a motor it would reduce the amp draw so theoretically instead of carrying 4 motors on the truck we could just carry the 1/2hp motors and use them universally. Wet tried that for four months and in that four months we had 5 of the 1/2hp motors burn out even though they had been put in condensers that only required a 1/3hp. At first we thought we were getting bad motors from Marathon and we were considering going to another brand, but after we sent the 5 in for warranty we got a report back from Marathon stating that they all showed evidence of internally overheating, and they went on to say that the type of damage noted was indictative of installing a motor with a higher HP rating than the load. They went on to say that when a motor is put on a lighter load the amp draw does drop down, but the drop in amp draw is not directly proportional to the reduction in load. By example, if a 1/2hp motor is put on a 1/4hp load the load drops 50% but the amp draw only drops by 35 to 40% and the additional amp draw above the load demand is dissipated as heat. We then went back to carrying all four motors and insuring we installed the correct HP rating and had no further problems with the Marathon motors....See MoreRelated Professionals
