Granite counter suggestions for custom kitchen near Orlando

Hello kitchen forum. I have not been here for about 12 years since I did my last kitchen, but I am currently finalizing the installation of a new kitchen in a new house so I wanted to pop in for advice.

I am doing a blue and white kitchen. I am looking for suggestions on my island countertop. Here's what the kitchen looks like currently. Its mid-install. I have absolutely amazing custom cabinet makers who have made me the most beautiful cabinets. They need the granite installed so they can finish because some cabinets on the perimeter countertops will sit on the granite. So I have limited time to take action.

The perimeter countertops are Polar White Marble but I want a blue for the island. Ideally to match the blue cabinets and blue stove.

I have looked at Blue Macubas and Crystaline Stone Blue. Does anyone have any experience with either of those / pictures?

I have Blue Bahia in my ktichen in my other house and I don't want to use that again. Anyone have thoughts? I do not like quartz, but am open to granite, marble, or quartzite. Anyone know of good places to go the greater Orlando area to find granite?

@beaglesdoitbetter, nice to see you! I can’t help you out with marble but there is a blue soapstone called rio blue. It might be more subtle than you want if you are matching the blue cabinet above, but it’s beautiful.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I think that may be a little bit too pale of a blue to match the stove / cabinets...

Hi. I'm getting a new granite countertop myself--it will be installed on Tuesday! So I have been doing lots and lots of looking at granite-- both in person (went to lots of warehouses) and in magazines. The trend is definitely toward lighter stone countertops, judging by what I see in the the magazines. (Carrera marble is also getting more popular in those designer kitchens, for some inexplicable reason. Marble is not practical in a kitchen, so many people are trying to imitate that look with certain granites, like white river. ) This trend toward lighter granite was verified by several granite sales people at the warehouses and fabricators I spoke with. Of course, this may be a regional thing. I live in Maryland, near D.C. , where everyone and his brother, it seems, is getting granite! Have you thought about checking out a lighter stone, like a cream or white? (such as Bianco romano, white shivakashi, Colonial Cream, white river, among others.)I am getting Harvest Cream, which is similiar to Colonial cream. It has a white or off-white background with lots of golden accents that pick up the color of my cabinets, and grey/black and taupe accents and a light sprinkling of garnet(burgandy) in there too. My cabinets are honey-spice maple (installed 10 years ago with a formica countertop). We did some minor remodeling that called for a new countertop--so I was so glad I didn't spend the big bucks for the corian that was so popular back then, and that I had an excuse to now get granite! I'm not sure how dark your "autumn" cabinets are, but you should try to have some contrast. If your cabinets are dark or medium dark, I think that a very light granite would provide a great contrast with your cabinets and darker floor, but that is just my personal opinion. Are you going for a traditional or contemporary look? Black tends to look "modern". If you do want a very dark countertop, I would think that a very dark brown would look better than black with your mocha floors(which I assume is a very dark brown.) You probably already have thought of this, but when you go to the granite warehouses to select your slab, bring a cabinet door and piece of your flooring to see how it all looks together. Another thing to consider is what you want on your backsplash. If you want a very "busy" stone or tile, then you should select a granite that would not look too busy, so the darker colors would work well for that, usually. I am going to go with a tumbled white travertine backsplash. If I went with anything busier, it would "fight" with my granite. Hope this helps. Hope this helps.

Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!

One advantage to having it seamed the full depth of the counter is they can use a seam setter to electronically pull the slabs together and give you a very tight seam. I don't know if you've seen my seam that I've posted a few times, but it's a hair's width. I can barely feel mine and can't see it unless I'm standing nearby. With a solid quartz like yours, the particles are like fine sand, so the cut should be very smooth.

In some ways you are lucky as there is a water and moisture issue that hasn't ruined your entire kitchen yet. As for the caulking behind the sink that is an issue that you would think in the last 50 years there would be addressed by the kitchen design industry. The back of a counter where a faucet is mounted should either have a counter angled into the sink or a top mounted sink that has an overflow back into the sink. Every person who shuts off their sink with wet hands soaks this area with water. As for the dishwasher maybe it is what you are doing as there is no odd install here? Do you leave the door open with steam coming out of it? I think replacing the counters would address the majority of the issues and also expose the possible causes that appear to be easy fixes. next time you wash your hand look at how much water is behind your faucet now multiply that by everytime you use it. Style of under mount sinks is the cause of a lot of this. A couple thousand now can save you a lot more later.

Hi beagles! I remember your first gorgeous kitchen (and many other things in your beautiful home - you have beautiful taste!)

When I did a remodel last year, I saw some slabs of Florida Wave and Blue Cielo, which each had some pretty blue accents. My sample of Florida Wave passed all my stain and etch tests. (Now when I see pictures of Florida Wave, most of the slabs do not have as much blue as what I saw in person but YMMV.) Sorry I can't help - I'm in Chicago and I ended up with something very different (leathered black with white veins) - but I do remember walking through stone yards with my designer and just loving some of the beautiful colors that nature produces. I hope you find something you love!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Florida Wave is a little too white. The Blue Cielo we are doing in the bathroom and it's a tiny bit too light for the kitchen, plus we were told it's not a great stone for kitchens because it is soft. .

The white is Benjamin Moore glacier white. It is the exact same white as my kitchen cabinet in PA because I'm actually having my PA cabinetmakers come down to Florida to do my cabinets! I got some quotes from FL and the cabinets sucked compared to Dutchwood and I asked Jason if they'd come up and he said yes! Unbelievably, they are doing my whole house for like $100K less than my lowest quote I got in FL for way better fully custom cabinets -- and that includes traveling to Florida to install!

With time constraints, this is a shoe leather issue, and the less than the ideal choice issue. If you need something in a short period of time, you are going to have to travel to the local wholesalers to view what they actually have in stock. Or, look for a national wholesale chain like Pacific Shores that puts their inventory online and that will transfer between branches. Even that takes at least a month to make happen.

There are several granite fabricators off of OBT in Orlando. I'm having my countertops redone hopefully early in the year (old busy granite) and was at one of them just a few days ago. I've used a couple different fabricators in that area over the years and have been satisfied with them all.

Thanks for the suggestions. We went and looked again at granite and I think we are giving up. I've found a concrete fabricator who does custom stuff and can make me counters that look the way I want -- so I'm just waiting for a quote.
