upper and lower cabinet alignment?
Comments (27)I refused uppers in our newly begun kitchen reno-husband was skeptical and my parents lost their minds. ("You HAVE to have cabinets on top, that's just what you DO that's what GOES there") Now that we have all the uppers removed, and they caved to my request for a giant window over the sink, it feels 10 times bigger. As far as a cabinet right over the sink like that-the medicine cabinet in our bathroom is a regular 24" wide, 12" deep upper cabinet set back into the wall. It only sticks out maybe 4". When we first put it in I was so angry at myself b/c I hit my head *every* time I washed my face, or leaned over to spit when brushing my teeth, and opening the door to it, having to do a lean-back at the same time was a nightmare. Once I mastered the finer art of spatial awareness (sigh) it's not been an issue (aside from the occasional not paying attention swift winging open of the door, and the slow-mo matrix head tilt back). But a 12" deep cabinet full depth right over the sink like that... I'd be staring at it every time I did dishes or went to wash my hands, if someone needed whatever was in the cabinet when I was washing dishes, they'd have to wait or I'd have to dodge the door..probably I would do something dumb like need to sneeze and crack my arm on the cabinet trying to get my face covered, maybe thunk my forehead, being a full-body sneezer. Just seems..claustrophobic I guess. That's just me tho..I'm neither graceful nor fond of things just a couple inches from my face....See MoreDesign help needed: Cabinet upper and lower alignment/ arrangement
Comments (2)Thanks for your input. It makes a lot of sense. Sometimes it looks nice having everything lined up nice; other times it doesn't seem to matter. My biggest challenge is getting the cabinets, usually wall cabinets it seems, to simply fit the space in an attractive way. It is probably much less of an issue with full-overlay doors, but with partial-overlay it seems I often get these arbitrary gaps between adjoining cabinets that bother me....See Morehood cabinet symmetry vs. alignment with base cabinets
Comments (34)Haha, love the sharpie idea! I think your wife’s choice of the Cloe tile would be lovely. The other samples are very nice as well. Backsplash is always the hardest kitchen decision for most of us. I do lean more towards a glossy tile for your kitchen style. I agree with you on seeing some pictures of the cloe that look great and others not so much. My husband (gc) and son just installed the white cloe in a shower for someone. The homeowner asked me to help her pick out the tile. I showed her the cloe and she fell in love. Since they had not worked with this tile before, I showed them pictures of what not to do. One photo had major lippage going on. I notice that mostly happens when no spacers are used. I also showed them a photo where they had placed two or more of the same exact color of tiles right next to each other. It is especially noticeable with the ones that are a little darker. I believe they ended up doing a 1/8” grout line and it turned out so pretty! Homeowner was thrilled. I am sure whatever you and your wife decide on the tile, or cabinets/no cabinets on range wall, it will look wonderful. I honestly don’t think you can make a bad choice. Please let us know what you decide!...See MoreCountertop and sinks out of alignment with vanity doors- worth fixing?
Comments (15)It would bug me in part because I'm sure this was a pricey job, but FWIW, we have a similar issue with both of our current sinks and it's not a big deal. In our bathroom, a pedestal sink is an inch off center to the built-in medicine cabinet/mirror above because we installed a new cabinet in the space where an original built-in had once been (original cabinet had been removed and a mirror placed to cover the hole, and when we replaced it the new cabinet was slightly bigger and we could only widen the opening in one direction because of a joist). When we eventually get around to replacing the sink, we will move the plumbing to align it, but in the meantime people don't notice unless I point it out. In our kitchen, the wall-mount faucet is centered on the cabinet but the whole thing is .75" off-center to the window above it due to constraints of the house framing. In both cases, your eye gets used to it and if you're not looking closely, you'd likely never notice. We debated how to handle the kitchen sink issue at length, and honestly I never even think about that one anymore. Our plumber was adamant that the important relationship was the faucet to the drain, and as long as those two were aligned, it could be out of alignment to either the window or the cabinet base. We chose to align to the cabinet....See MoreRelated Professionals
