I'm very sorry I did not answer the questions from the last few years... I've been out of reno mode for a while :) It's probably too late, but here are the replies: @walkin_yesindeed - the vanity finish has held up just fine. However, it's not the original paint. We sanded and re-painted with new Ben Moore bathroom paint. No issues with dampness (we do run the fan for every shower, though.) @kirkhall - I have NOT been happy with the touted un-stainable-ness of the epoxy grout on the floor. I mean, it's better than regular grout, but it didn't stay white no matter how much I cleaned it. It looks fine, since the tile is multi-toned, but it's definitely not still white. The shower grout, however, has held up extremely well. @SparklingWater - I don't recall the demo being terribly difficult, but that may be because I knew what to expect from other parts of the house. It was tile over a dense cement. @MrsD - I think the grout color is standard white. @MayaEoff - Our tub is the standard 30" size.

We looked at making the center shelf fixed and the others adjustable but choose to fix all as shown. The cabinet is for two boys and the shelves are sized to fit anything they have. The client is a designer here in Vancouver and like me does not like the adjustable look. I find that people never adjust shelfs once originally set up and that when ordering custom built ins you get a much cleaner upscale look without the mass of extra holes. In a dining room or family room this adjustability comes with a certain "Ikea" look. Often you are undecided at time of production. If adjustability is required just allow for movement one or two inches over a set height and not fully adjustable along the whole span. Or offer adjustability in one bank of shelves not all. By removing these extra holes the whole unit just looks higher end. My thoughts.

In the special needs community, we have an acronym that everyone knows: DID, which stands for Dads In Denial. Deep down inside, Mom knows there is something wrong with her child, but Dad refuses to admit it, refuses to even consider it. Sound like you've got a classic Dad In Denial. Cole sounds like a very deeply troubled young man, and he's chosen sexual ways of acting out, which spread the trauma throughout the rest of the family. Quite simply, that boy needs MAJOR help, and he needs to be separated from the younger children who are not able to adequately protect themselves. (Is it possible Cole was sexually abused? He's certainly acting out in ways that suggest something of the sort...) Not to minimize the trauma to your son -- but I suspect if it ends now and Cole moves out for a while and gets into treatment, that your son will be able to put it into perspective and move on in a healthy way. But if nothing chages? My goodness - What message will this send your kids? As a parent, you simply HAVE to protect them. You have to. They have to know that you, as a parent, will protect them from harm. If your marriage truly is a good one, I'd send all of the kids out for an evening and have a heart to heart with him. PREPARE your side in advance, because you need to say what you need to say, and having it organized and streamlined may be the only way to make sure it happens. Key points: -- Cole needs MAJOR help. He's been acting out for a long time, but his behavior has taken a turn toward sexually victimizing others. In a nutshell, he is acting like a young sexual predator. Cole needs help and as his parents, you and Dad NEED to see that he gets it - NOW. -- Being in the same house with an untreated Cole is dangerous for your children. Your son has already been damaged, at this point, probably not irreparably, but only because the problem was discovered. Now that you know about it, you, as a responsible parent, NEED to act on it. You cannot ask your son to live under the same roof with the brother who sexually abused him. -- You love your husband, your marriage and your family. After much soul-searching, you have come to the conclusion that to save your family, Cole and your children cannot live under the same roof. And because it would be unbearably cruel to 'abandon' Cole all over again, Dad should take him and move out while Cole starts treatment. You can have family dinners together and still be committed to your marriage and family -- but you need to protect your children. Without Dad's help, the family cannot survive. So either he supports the separation, or you need to pursue a divorce. Best of luck to you -- And please, stay strong for your children's sake.

@ Sabrina Alfin Interiors Everyone has a perspective, and I certainly respect yours. But, consider this. While your redo is beautiful and functional, it has lost all of its mid-century charm and no longer comports with the era of the house. Additionally, it has destroyed a lot of old-time craftsmanship and materials that are now rare, including old growth pine cabinets and tile in a style and color no longer available. These things may not be important to you or your clients, and if that's true, then fine. But our perspective has always been the de minimus rule: "Do the least to your old house that solves the problem." Following the rule preserves the character of the house and retains some valuable craftsmanship while adding modern functionality where it is appropriate. There are certainly old baths that are beyond salvaging, and perhaps the one you did over was one of these, but the bath here seems a good candidate for a de minimus makeover. And while at the end of the makeover it will not look brand spanking new, it will be clean, functional and still retain its mid-century character. Tile countertops are not necessarily a nightmare to clean. Glazed tile is one of the most sanitary of surfaces and easy to clean with a damp wipe. The old cement-based grout was the problem, but that has gone away with advent of urethane and epoxy grouts that are are an easy-clean option that does not crack, stain, discolor, or crumble. They are all we use in our projects. Below are the tile countertops in my personal kitchen. Installed 13 years ago, they still look new. The grout is still perfect -- no stains, no discoloration. Glazed style itself cannot be stained, is impervious to heat (up to 2,000 degrees) and is very resistant to impact damage. I would have nothing else in my kitchen. Wood cabinets are likewise easy to update with all manner of devices and organizers to bring their utility and functionality up to current levels while still preserving the post-War look and saving a whole lot of money. Below, for example are kitchen cabinets built originally in 1949. We replaced the pulls and in some cases the drawer fronts, and added soft-close mechanical glides. The pull-out cutting board is new as is the countertop. We stripped every inch of five coats of paint and gave the cabinets their original not-quite-bright-white finish using catalyzed varnish for clean-ability and long life. The floor looks new, but it is the original oak that we found after removing three layers of sheet flooring (and two underlayments). Evidently the first layer of linoleum was put down immediately after the oak was installed and varnished, and it preserved the oak for nearly 100 years. Below is the cleaned up kitchen sink with a new chromed drain. Most old cast sinks can be cleaned up with a polisher used on automobiles. There is usually a lot of porcelain enamel under the scratched and stained top layer. Is the sink perfect? No, there are still some scratches that could not be removed without cutting through the porcelain, but it is clean and functional and ready for its next 70 y ears of honorable service. So, my suggestion, based on over 40 years of rehabilitating old houses is 1. If you own a heritage house, you are very, very lucky. You own craftsmanship that is just not widely available today. 2. You are the custodian and conservator of a lot of history, so act like it. Don't discard anything that can be preserved. Not only do you conserve the character of your house and a lot of materials that cannot be found today, but you save the energy cost of making and installing new materials, and help the planet die just a little bit slower.
