The Old House Design Dilemma Dining Room

Dining Room Dilemma

We are trying to create a defined dining space in our otherwise open-concept home. Any ideas on other ways to lay this out so that accessing and using the bench-seat doesn't require lots of sliding around the table? Possibly, the bench is only on two walls?

This is a breakfast 'nook' situation, not an area appropriate for 'dining'

Bench seting at dining table is horrible that type of seating barely works at the park where everyone wears shorts or pants. The pic you posted is useless we need to see the space and ideally a to scale floor plan posted here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post

Hi Beverly, the chairs are gray actually. I purchased here at Houzz. And the wall is a dark teal. The rest of the house is equally bright during the day. I have big windows opposite this dining area. At night though, it’s very dark. I have high ceilings past this dining area.

West Elm and other sites showed to do it like that, it doesn’t make sense to me either. Weird I am not brilliant in math & i am a new home owner I never cared to decorate apartments and damage furniture in the move so now i am trying to make this house a home. I was never bright in math. Thnx though

IMO you need to wait until the house is finished then do the decor . I have no idea what this will look like in the new house and IMO 12' ceilings are 2' too high . The dining set looks too big in the pics you post so IMO not going to be an issue it does to me look out of place in that space but if you love it you use it it is your home.

To add to chispa’s observation, making another seating group with the white leather sofa that was in the dining room is a possibility too. I’m all for buying new furniture but sometimes reimagining what is already on hand can work nicely too. There are already 9 dining chairs/stools adjacent to each other, possibly 11 if end chairs are added to the table, plus 3-4 more stools at the sofa console. If your lifestyle prioritizes dining seating options more than lounging, you know best. Not trying to persuade anyone, just making an observation.

A booth with bench seating in a restaurant requires shifting. I would not care for it in my home.

I agree. Benches look beguiling in photos but don’t work in real life. Everyone has to sit in sequence except the people lucky enough to get chairs?

I like the ”look” but find benches in real life to be uncomfortable/awkward and no one likes to sit against a window even with a back pillow.

What are the measurements of that space? Is it an option to skip the bench and use a round table with chairs in that space?
