Best budget priced carpeting choice for stairs and hallways?

This isn’t for my house.

However, I will be chipping in to help an elderly relative replace the worn out carpeting that goes up the stairs, down the hallway and into two upstairs bedrooms.

We will be decluttering the place, then trying to get it cleaned up so she can get a younger roommate that can can take care of the new carpet, vacuum, sweep, mop, take out trash etc, weekly, plus help with basic household maintenance she can’t do safely herself like replacing HVAC filter, burned out bulbs, dead smoke detector batteries etc as needed.

The renter would get below market rent to make it worth their while to spend an extra hour or so per week in cleanup chores. She would get household help plus rental income in return for having to live with a roommate. So, the arrangement should be mutually beneficial.

Before she would be able to find a taker for the room rental, the place needs to look presentable and a major part of that will be replacing the worn out carpeting after the decluttering and deep cleaning.

So, we are looking for ”cheap” carpeting that is durable enough to handle the type of foot traffic and wear stairs and hallways would get and we would just have the same matching carpeting continue into the spare bedrooms.

What are suggestions on how to find and choose appropriate carpeting?
