How do i make this house look shorter..and better?

My aunt had the roof changed to her house. The problem is that the house is really tall and awkward now. How do we make it seem shorter by only using materials like wood..or something else? We would like to keep it on the low budget..nothing too expensive..

I would paint the entire stucco the same colour not cutting it off with another colour at the bottom. You can add wood beams in the gable painted the same colour as the roof trim. I would also suggest an update in colour scheme, it can be as shown or with stucco in the same tone but lighter. Paint the fence to match the colour scheme of the house and work on some landscaping along the house. I don't know where the walkway is located along the fence but I show a style for the gate next to large address numbers.

What about doing a simple wood detail at the top and then bring up that lower paint color?

It might be easy enough to do and not very costly

It looks like the "front" (view) side has vertical siding. Is that the same as the "back" side? So that the horizontal and little bits of diagonal siding are only on the gabled ends? If so, I'd consider swapping out the siding on the garage end (and the far end, possibly, if it matters) to be vertical siding that matches the long sides. The funny bits of white trim can go, and I would also lose the contrasting corner trim (paint it to match the body of the house). If you don't need the light from the two windows above the garage, consider losing those as well. Maybe replace with a simple vent. If you're wanting to reside completely, I think a vertical board-and-batten looks great on a California ranch. Here's a thread from another board that shows a ranch with original B&B siding. If you scroll down you'll see a photoshop where someone has made the garage door B&B as well, so it all blends together. And way toward the bottom you'll see it painted in a dark gray. I think this type of siding works well with darker colors. Here is a link that might be useful: Board and Batten ranch.

I would clean the door well, and apply a scratch cover touch up in the color of the doors. The scratches are not that bad, and wont even be noticable. The black hardware should look good, if it matches in with other black hardware in your home.

Tony, since both walkways appear to have the same significance, calling attention to the primary door should be your objective. If budget and design would permit, convert the double windows to French doors. If not a metal awning above the door and new stone pillars flanking the walk with planters atop should do the trick.

I like green with the brick and also a the idea of good plantings to cover the concrete this is one of my fave colors with brickI woulr remove the shutters for sure and yoi need a railing on that entry deck so ,aybe simple metal and glass and a nice MCM front foor with more glass. I would make the flower beds deeper and then do the planting further out from the front wall so the windows still get some light . If you want low maintenace this isa great inspiration for MCM type landcaping

Enlarging the window is a major expensive structural change. Very costly. But landscaping and the trim mentioned above would do wonders.

I am wondering why this was done at all? Can we see the whole house ? That wall is huge with such a tiny window so if anew bigger window is not possible then maybe a nice trellis built in front of that wall with a nice evergreen vine and then more landscaping to draw your eye down. The trim idea for sure works but I need to see th whole house

Debbi's suggestion is the best IMHO. Also plant a tall shrub or very short tree to the right of the window to remove all that blank space. Here in Calif. many houses have fake shutters framing the windows.

l like lisedv's rendering, looks great! Definitely keep the deep eaves! I like the suspended band board across the gabled area. Adds depth and dimension. Now add a trellis to the right of the window...some flowering plants.
