I once saw a video showing a full blooming Brass Band. It's absolutely breathtaking.

I’ve been waiting on both Golden Zest and Double Easy Orange and Brass Band is fabulous too! All three jumped in my cart, but wow, the tax and shipping drive it up to 191 dollars and some cents. It feels a bit salty for three roses… but I really want them for my new orange and golden toned bed! Not sure what to do.

@judijunebugarizonazn8, I just checked the Honey browser extension for discount codes for J&P, and the code JPBDAY20 currently works for 20% off. I just tested it and it works. At least 20% helps a little bit...

Judi, I agree that $191 is indeed salty for three bare root roses! I keep expecting my local nursery, who does a big rose business, to carry Double Easy Orange, but they haven't yet. I haven't contacted them about it this year, mainly because they're pretty noncommittal about what roses they will be carrying when they open for bare roots the first business day of January. This reminds me to ask. But for heaven's sake, it's a J&P rose, so they should be releasing it widely!

I'll give a hearty thumbs up for Brass Band. The first pic is of my elderly grafted BB, and the second one is one bloom of the back-up I purchased from RU (own-root) a couple of years ago. I am an orange rose fiend :-D

Just checked it out, found the selection awesome however, YIKES prices have almost doubled!! $50!

At least it makes it easier to talk myself into a tree Rose at $79!

Carla, windowsill shared a 20% code. I used a 20% code for 1st order. Agree that J&P is so expensive, which is the exact reason why I didn't get Double easy orange last year. But this year I just can't resist anymore.

Two years ago this April, I purchased my Double Easy Orange from J&P, and I'm sure the price was around $40. I don't think a ten dollar increase over two years is that bad, considering the inflationary costs of everything else. Of course, you have to add the shipping costs. I've been looking at Eisvogel prices of online "boutique" sellers, and they run about an average of $60 for this rose. The best place I've seen reasonable rose prices is my local large nursery, which sells its roses as five gallon plants, and still has lower prices that online sellers, plus no shipping. Some of these J&P roses are their exclusives and have been for years (Golden Zest and DEO), so you're stuck with whatever they charge. Diane

Those of you who like orange should also seriously consider Outrageous. Fabulous orange blend covered in large blooms, super strong fragrance of old rose and fruit.

I’m glad to see so many new varieties and great oldies, this is the best collection J&P has had in a long time. But yes, inlflation has really hit, the new exclusives are almost $60!. I did get a Double Easy Orange 36” Tree during JP clearance for just $40 last year, but it was scary to get a dormant tree in June when we had 100-110F days outside!

My local nursery is still selling firrst run, 5 gal, bud and bloom varieites for $20-25…All the Weeks and Star roses, plus a few others. I don’t know how they do it!

Ok, I did it. I’m not sure if I should thank you for that code, windowsill, because it worked and I went ahead and threw another one in the cart to boot. So now I have Golden Zest, Double Easy Orange, Double Ambre and Brass Band. Ben’s recommendation for Outrageous caused me to put that one in the cart too, but I knew I was being excessive and took it back out again. But there we go: four more roses for my Orange Bed! Y’all are terrible enablers. ;) Now I’m just waiting for LEH to be available from DA again. The rep I talked to pretty much assured me it would come back in stock again in November or December of this year and told me to keep checking back. Of course, he couldn’t say for sure it would be available again, but… oh yes, thanks, windowsill for the code! 😂

Speaking of rising prices of roses in general, I can’t help but be impressed with the prices at David Austin roses. They have kept them at a decent price, rising slowly over the years. And their warranty is impressive. I know there’s a lot of gripe against that company and I’m not here to argue, but I can and do certainly appreciate these two things. Now, if I can only snag me an LEH, I’ll be even more appreciative. :)

Judi, I'm afraid I'm a terrible rose/plant enabler ;) I can't wait to see what your orange bed looks like, and I hope you can snag LEH this winter. I agree that DA's prices are competitive. I thought they might charge more for their re-releases like Evelyn, but no.

The Double Ambre I got this fall from J&P seems quite vigorous so far and is already sending up some basal canes, which I often struggle to get indoors. I can't wait to see its next flush.

Ben, I didn't order Outrageous because the petal count seems to be on the lower side, 25-30. Also HMF said it's suspectible to black spots. But now I go back and check those pictures on HMF. The bloom shape does look like my favorite OGR look. Is it possible with relatively low petal count? I thought it has to have enough petal count to have OGR look. Also how is disease resistance in your location? We should have very similar weather.

Judi, agree that David Austin is so much better at price rising. I checked my email box. When I placed my first order with them in 2018, it's $28.5 per bush. Now it's $35. They didn't raise much at all.

My first order with J&P in 2017 was $22.95 for 2 quarts own root (not on sale). Brass Band I ordered this time is also 2 quarts and the price is 49.95. this is really more than double the price.

Judi, my favourite orange roses are Amoure de Molene, Easy Does It, Carol Lions Rose, Crazy Love and Etrusca.

I also want to chime in that a couple years ago when I bought a Sedona tree Rose, it failed. I notified Jackson Perkins, and they immediately sent out a replacement and for some reason stuck a second one in there. Both Sedona tree roses survived and are doing fabulous.

KJ -Just saw your question…Outrageous doesn’t really have OGR form, I like it for the colors, heavy bloom and extraordinary fragrance. I am surprised you have blackspot in San Jose? I thought SJ is the ideal place to grow roses, similar to my Sacramento climate, but milder summers. I have not had to spray anything in the 3 years I’ve lived here.0

I did get black spots here! Probably only in spring though. Double delight, Bliss, Matchless mother. Those all had black spots in spring. So I got rid of them all and no need to worry about black spots anymore 😉.

You never need to spray? I do spray for powdery mildew and rust. Some of my roses could have pretty bad powdery mildew in late summer and early fall.

Never any spraying here in this semiarid country (SW Idaho). Of course, it's so dry, we have to irrigate, but I like disease free gardening, whether it's hot peppers or roses. Few insect pests, and no serious rose disease like RRD, either.KJ, If we just had California's long growing season, it would be perfect. A long, long time ago, I lived in San Jose and thought it would be a wonderful place to grow roses, so I'm surprised you have had any black spot or PM.

Diane, I do enjoy the long growing season here 😆. Lots of my roses are still blooming now. Below are two oranges blooming today: Adobe sunrise and Crazy Love.

No water restrictions here with our tremendous system of snow melt, dams, reservoirs, etc. Lots of hydroelectric power generated at the dams. Clean energy, but hard on salmon. Diane

Sorry just saw your reply, Ben. Miyabi is so beautiful. I had a chance to get one this fall, but decided to pass on because one of my friends told me her Miyabi is quite suspectible to both black spots and powdery mildew. She lives in Fremont, about 20 minutes driving from my house, and closer to the coast.

I water my roses two or three times a week. The funny thing is my water usage is still considered much better than the efficiency level compared to nearby household on my monthly water report. Guess this is because I don't have a lawn. Converted the lawn totally to a rose garden.

I have been following your YouTube channel for a while. Love those videos. Looking forward for more videos!

My brother used to live on the edge of Fremont (his house was in Milpitas, the next door neighbor in Fremont!). Now they live in Danville. Both excellent rose environments I’d imagine, but they aren’t garden people. Regan Nursery is in Fremont, and I’ve ordered a Love Song tree and Evelyn for pickup this winter, so I’ll finally get to visit.

I water 3 times a week in summer, more if weather is super hot…my water bill reflects my generousity, thankfully water here is relatively cheap. Thanks for the nice words on my videos, they are fun to make, and I’ve made some rose friends from all over the world. I’ll be sure to do one on Outrageous next spring, it’s one of those super bloomy floribundas where you barely see any foliage.

Ben, I love Regan. So sad to see them closing. City of Fremont refused to renew their lease. Such a huge loss to the community. Regan is very close to where I work. So I often visited there during my lunch break. Other than roses, they also offer good varieties of fruit trees which you wouldn't be able to find in Home Depot or Lowe's.

Please share more videos. I also wanted to know how Cosmic cloud will perform next year, especially in summer😆.

Edit: The information I saw on Nextdoor a few months ago regarding Regan will be closed might not be true. Such a relief 😁.

Carla, there was a post a few months ago on Nextdoor that Regan will be closed because City of Fremont will give the land to a builder for commercial development. Since you mentioned that, I went back to search the post and it looks like it might not be true. Someone said the builder that was going to do construction there backed out. This is good news at least for now. I don't want to lose Regan, the only place I can order my roses without paying shipping fee .

Maybe they lost part of their acreage, so they don't have room to pack and ship anymore, that's what you saw?

But it looks like the author has edited the post later. No confirmation of closing as of now. Someone said the builder has backed out, so Regan is no longer in danger of closing.

No idea why they stopped shipping. Don't think they lost part of their acreage. My guess is they might be short on hand.

I had also read that Regan’s original owners passed their business to the next generation, who didn’t want to run it, not sure if that is true. I did not realize they leased the land, too bad they didn’t own it (like Heirloom and Chamblees) it’s a gold mine.

Cosmic Clouds has proved to be an excellent rose, very well branced, productive, amazing deep purple flowers when the weather is right. I was going to make a video on it, but then an atmospheric river decided to dump over NorCal.

Ben, love the color! My only concern is deep purple usually fried in summer heat.

When it’s hot, the color is not as deep or as purple. I would not consider it an burn prone variety , and there are many others that I do. Of course, when get into triple digits most all of them burn after a few days. I think my most burn resistant are Veterans Honor , True Love and Pompom Veranda, which doesn’t seem to burn even at 110F!

I saw Brass Band at Otto's last week -- and it was truly gorgeous. Not a rude shade of orange, just really very pretty. And a super healthy bush.

I don’t like garish shades of orange and my first thought when I heard the name was that it must be a “brassy” shade of orange and that didn’t sound appealing to me. But all the pictures I saw online looked amazing so I ordered it. Good to hear that you were impressed when you saw it in person!
