Rooting hormone or no?

Do you guys use rooting hormone for cuttings? I didn't used to a long time ago, but the last I don't know how many years I have been. I'm wondering if the powder is somehow keeping my cuttings from rooting sometimes -- even though I tap off the excess, it still ends up as a pretty thick coating on the surface of the stems, almost completely covers the nodes. Could it be choking off oxygen or something? Just wondering if you have success with cuttings NOT using rooting powder. I don't remember what my success rate used to be without it. I grow cuttings from annuals, no woodies.
