FOTESS: November – Early December “Christmas Stocking Exchange”
Comments (158)Faye, Merry Christmas! I opened my gift this morning and I am overjoyed with everything! Thank you so much! The monkey is so special because my little brother had one of those sock monkeys as a kid and every time I see one I think of him. I am going to send him a picture so he can see it. The ornament is also so special and reminds me of my grandparents that are no longer with me. I love the macrame and this was one of my favorite hobbies as a young adult. I can't wait to hang it up. The stocking with the plaid snowflake is adorable and the journal and pencils are something I can really enjoy in my quite time. I love the precious card that you made with the Snowman and snowflakes! The cutting board is awesome and will definitely be used in the kitchen. I have been seeing those chocolates advertised on tv and thinking I would love some! Yum! The body spray smells amazing and I will keep it with me in my purse. I also thank you for the seeds which I will be winter sowing very soon, I so appreciate everything and all the thought and care that went in to my gift. It is all so special! Thank you so much and hope you have a very, very Blessed New Year! Amy...See MoreYour MAY 2024 highlights
Comments (107)Amsonia ’Halfway to Arkansas’, Baptisia ’American Goldfinch’ and some alliums. I wish Amsonia hubrechtii liked me, but after three failures I have settled for this one, though its fall show isn’t as impressive. Subtle hint of red from the bags of soil. Rouge, this is your fault, you are a prime enabler. First flower open on Spigelia marilandica! Anyone else growing Saruma henryi? Comments (33)diggerdee - Thanks for asking, devil's club is described here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/oplopanax_horridus.shtml It's definitely not for everybody in a home perennial garden, rather its 'horridus' thorns are lamented by hikers ! but native Alaskans and my forager friends use it medicinally - one day I will tackle peeling the stems and making a salve for my arthritis but for now I do purchase it and I think it helps :)) I love it for its architecturally reaching stems, white flowers, pure red berries that the birds love and it just grows naturally at the edges of my property. Anyway, August isn't over yet so I took a few photos recently: Enjoying the color of this geranium:...See MoreYour OCTOBER 2024 Highlights
Comments (53)I just got up to take my vitamin d, thanks for the reminder! And thanks for asking - at solstice, we see sunset at 3:45 but it's a long twilight with wonderful color in the southwestern sky. It can be torture getting up for school and work but those days are behind me now, so if I'm in bed until 9 am or slater it's fabulous because it's such a cozy feeling getting up that late and still watching the sunrise an hour later- loving the word hygge that I learned a few years ago - whether it's tv or a book or friends stopping over, I like to stay up late and sleep late as opposed to summer burning the candle at both ends. I think we'll have daylight savings this weekend and that means darker earlier, not really looking forward to that and I wish we would just get rid of that - it's especially hard in the spring when it's dark again in the morning after getting used to sunrise at the 'right' time. And getting out in the best sunlight hours from say noon to 2 pm is essential and helps me from getting 'SAD'. My winter camping and mountain backcountry skiing days are behind me but they afford wonderful memories and a sense of belonging here. A little bit of gardening happens indoors - I'll stratify seeds soon and I received two oriental poppy roots in the mail too late to get them out so I'll try to keep those alive - and some houseplants - my 'christmas?' cactus are in nice bloom right now. I do some gardening under lights usually not until after the holidays. I have herbs to try to keep alive, that's been hit or miss. I do enjoy the respite from the constant weeding and the feeling my garden is 'unkempt' . Snow begins to melt allowing gardening to begin in April, putting out seeds and watching crocus bloom out of the frozen ground. This year we are determined to keep our firepit shoveled out and do some nice winter barbecues - nothing like a warm fire and dark winter sky - we have a new breeo grill I'm looking forward to cooking on and I love the gazing at the night sky all winter , and cross country skiing is very fun with an apres' ski beer from one of our great microbreweries. Sorry if I went on too long, was fun to think about why I love winter in Alaska!...See MoreRelated Professionals
