Almost all fruits I've seen this fall have stem end rot.

Apples I bought at an orchard and at a farmers market developed stem end rot a few days after bringing them home. While it didn't have stem rot, an eggplant from the market had a dark brown streak down the center when I cut it open. Is it because we had such a hot, dry summer this year? I never remember seeing so much rot in fruit. This is in upstate New York.
