I got garage port up/want info on potting soil and pots
Comments (1)As long as your greenhouse is not sealed air tight you should not have a problem with kerosene. I buy soil at Lowes, HD, Wal-mart and local nursery. What ever I can find at the best price. I also mix my own. You can ask around at the stores for leftover pots. I ordered some form Igcusa.com last month. Find some place close to you so shipping will not be too high. I noticed you are in zone 3. Do you intend to use the greenhose all winter or just as a season extender. In the winter you would need to add a second layer of poly or bubble wrap. Heating would be very expensive....See MoreOverwintering hostas in glazed pot: will the garage work?
Comments (15)go for it.. just as an aside.. pots can crack for one of two reasons ... not counting teenager kicking it .. lol .. if unglazed.. the pot itself can hold water.. freeze and crack ... or .. if the media is too wet .. and it expands as its freezing.. the pot can crack ... think water bottle in freezer ... its a hosta.. have sonny boy tip it out in the veg garden. shove that sucker in the ground.. clean out the pot.. and store it.. is the way i would go ... but you have experience with geraniums.. so you are further on the learning curve than i am.. so go for it ... something looks off with your H ... like it might be planted too deep ... check that next spring.. and insure it hasnt sunk in the media... which basically means .. lol .. repot it anyway ... full circle.. do it now.. and just shove it in mother earth ... ken ps: and when you do repot.. search the recycle bins for a regular pot.. and use a pot in pot system.. so next fall.. you can just yank the pot out ... for storage ......See MoreOverwinter hosta in plastic pot under arborvitae: review my plan?
Comments (9)Gardengal, linnea wants hers to freeze and stay frozen. Your hosta routine sounds about like mine was, as I'm also in zone 8. I just left mine sitting in the pot where they were. If it rains, they get wet. If it freezes, they get frozen. However, here, it thaws and stays that way most of the winter. If it is a really dry winter, I water. Linnea's problem is that her hosta can rot if it thaws and freezes repeatedly and holds water. That's why she turns it on the side and keeps it in the shade. She wants it to stay frozen and have no standing water in it, ever. Hosta in pots are much easier in zone 8. bkay...See MoreIt's not spring for me---until I see my hostas coming up!
Comments (40)Pots are a lot of work, and it is not always a success story. There are others with many more pots and I wonder how they do it! Many of my pots have begun to pip even though the weather is so cold. Most of the ones in the ground (except for undulata marginata) have not emerged. Your weather sounds awful MadPlanter. We're still cold too with today being in the mid to upper 30's and the nights around 30. I have been holding off taking the pots out of the storage well and other storage areas. After they come out, the next problem is critters. They start digging into the pots. With this spring being so cold and late, that probably means more digging. I generally try to keep them covered at night, and I think that helps. But I can only do that for so long. If they keep digging the same pot, I will put some pebbles on the media or find some mesh to cover them with. Wouldn't that be great if the slugs were reduced due to the awful weather? (Wishful thinking)...See MoreRelated Professionals
