minnie royal and royal lee cherry - texas?
Comments (11)I should elaborate on the water issue. My outdoor cherries were half the size of greenhouse fruit and 35+ brix. That says too much water deficit to me. In the greenhouse I'm always suggesting a long term water deficit to increase brix on pluot and nectarine, not sure about cherries. But judging by fruit size and brix in the linked report above, I got it right on water last year. A refractometer is very helpful on water management. If brix is below 16 on most stone fruit, with large fruit size, that indicates too much water. If brix is above 32-35 and fruit small, that is too much water deficit....See MoreMinnie Royal and Royal Lee Cherry Trees Netted
Comments (16)Hah, I don't know, mrclint. I'm only 5'4" and my wonderful and patient hubby is the same height :-) Trying to get netting over my trees which are 7' tall (and I keep all my trees to 7' or shorter) might be a monumental task without a frame. I'm hoping the birds don't discover my other stone fruits. I have enough of a challenge with all the rodents and snails. I don't think I could net them all, just the cherries :-) Speaking of netting and getting good at doing something the more you do it: I was absolutely amazed at a commercial vineyard we say when we drove out on a trip somewhere (can't remember if I saw this around my area or up in Bakersfield). I saw rows and rows of commercial grapes growing that were all netted. They had a frame built right into the grape trellis that nets were draped over. Rows and rows of netted grapes. I was just amazed. What a lot of work, but it was done so well. I still couldn't help but think that was a lot of work. But, I'm sure worth the effort in some places, as birds can completely strip a grapevine in a matter of days in some places. Patty S....See MoreMinnie Royal and Royal Lee Cherry Tree First Crop :-)
Comments (15)Royal Minnie is just much more vigorous growing than Royal Lee, so it blooms first (and more profusely). The bloom times of the two varieties still mostly overlap though (or at least they did for me last year). This year there are still blossoms on the Royal Lee while on the Minnie Royal all the blossoms have already dried out and a few druplet fruits have begun to form now. Both these two trees are Royal Lee: (There are several Royal Minnie trees too, but there isn't enough space to show those pictures here) zone 10 It seems obvious Royal Lee isn't perfectly adapted to the climate here, but the trees are only two years in the ground right now. Their growth might be more vigorous once they get a little more mature and established. Or perhaps I meant to say "it seems obvious even Royal Lee still isn't perfectly adapted to this climate", since (with the exception of its pollination partner Royal Minnie) you'd be hard pressed to find cherry varieties lower chill than Royal Lee....See MoreRoyal Jubilee vs Charles R McIntosh vs Pomponella vs Hermosa for hedge
Comments (6)I would be reluctant to combine chinas or teas with DA's rubbing shoulders in a hedge. The vigor, growth patterns, shape, and leaf textures would not complement each other, not to mention the incongruous flower shapes & sizes. If it's due to lack of space, I recommend you focus on size versus color harmony, start your planting with the smaller growers and moving up to the larger shrubs incrementally. For example Hermosa is a smaller plant and would be overwhelmed placed next to a six footer. If you prefer accentuating the different sizes between varieties and want a cottage garden effect, using the right perennials or annuals in between will help tremendously in smoothing out the discordance and creating a pleasing rhythm....See MoreRelated Professionals
