Comments (11)Amy - I owe you an email........ I am off to nap in a minute..... on the overnight last night and in still mourning (lol) so exhausted... will answer tonight. ob- they are from a local sawmill that actually has grown quite big. I think you can order most of their products on the internet. http://www.bairdbrothers.com/ They are also doing our stairs, interior doors and several other things as I recall. The wood is character hickory- prefinished. It is becoming quite a popular product for them. Shopgirl- the color is SW Demure. Just found out the carpet we picked ( many mooons ago) is ridiculously expensive..... looks like a revamp is in order. We matched the paint to the carpet so now we have to match carpet to paint. I think I am going to let her pick...... so my next pic of her room will probably show purple carpet. LOL ajpl....even better than the lawn furniture.... the white box next to the chairs being used as a lunch table..... is a toilet! LOL PD...See MoreProblems staining Hickory?? Anyone hear this?
Comments (8)I work with wood flooring. I have not stained hickory, but I am not surprised that folks find it resistant to penetrating stains, as the wood is dense. The only place on the boards that will accept pigment well will be the soft wood of the grain pattern. As a consequence, the floor will only become more busy-looking, because the staining will accentuate the grain pattern. The problem that some people have with peeling of finish over stain has a lot to do with the finish not adhering to the pigment that rests on the wood after the vehicle (usually hydrocarbons) has evaporated. Unfortunately, stains do not include much in the formula that resembles a binder; little binder equals little sticking power. A piece of peeled finish will carry with it the pigment the finish was applied over; the pigment layer in such a case is the weak layer. Some stains include more binder than others. The stain I use almost exclusively is DriFast by Bona that I believe is a thin oil-modified urethane with pigment added. I have had no peeling issues whatsoever using that product in combination with their finish materials. A wood floor finish expert will know about 'water popping' and sanding schedules that will prepare any wood for a proper staining. Some of us in the industry have been experimenting with paint slurries as a staining media, especially where a very dark result is desired. It works, because of the binders in the paint film. However, anyone who attempts such a thing had better do the necessary testing to determine whether or not the chosen products work well as a floor finishing technique and are compatible....See MoreNatural hickory...yes or no....pics inside
Comments (42)I think it looks beautiful but there is more to consider. Since there is so much variation you need to consider where the wood will be and what other "patterns" will be in the room or rooms. I think this flooring can look very busy especially since there are so many short boards creating so many seams. When this type of flooring is used with colors but not too many patterns and if the short boards are picked out and used in closets I think it is really wonderful. We are currently building and have been very discouraged with board lengths available. We have decided to go to a mill so we can get more of the longer boards. I love wood, I love natural things. I just think you need to be careful that you don't create a lot of chaos in whole. To only see the floor, it is too hard to know if everything else you have in mind works....See MoreWhat Can You Tell Me About Hickory (& Pics?)
Comments (1)Suzieque, I fell in love with Mannington's Hickory that is their best grade since I like color variation, loved the 5" wider boards in the Hickory and liked the hardness of it (50% harder than red oak). Then I decided to go with a harder wood and went with Brazilian Cherry that I just had installed and I love the coloring. I tried to do a search and went to many sites but this site seems to explain Hickory the best regarding the grades of Hickory & the manufacturer determine the look. Here is a link that might be useful: Grades of Hickory & manufacturer determine the look...See MoreRelated Professionals
