What is the counter made of? If the installer cannot repair the scratch to look like rest of the counter, have them take it out and put in a new counter that is not scratched and looks the same. Counter tops cost too much to settle for a flawed one from day one.

Hello, we recently got brand new L.G. Viatera Muse quartz countertops installed. It’s only been about 3 weeks and I noticed a few strange white cloudy spots? They are perfectly smooth and blend seamlessly with the countertop. we have barely used them and only used a special cleaning spray for natural stone, it’s all natural and says safe for quartz. I have no idea if these are normal variations within the stone, or something that damaged them? I can only find 3 small ones in very random areas?

Problem with quartz is that industry is not telling the truth. Quartz is hardest material, harder than granite but the so called quartz slabs are not pure quartz, most of the quartz slabs has less than 60% quartz rest is all sort of industrial waste like granite/marble powder from quarry, glass and concrete and biggest culprit is the resin. Most manufacture states percentage of quartz vs resin by weight, this is just the marketing tactics, stone is heavier than plastic resin, if you look at volume most slab has 15-30% resin. Resin is biggest culprit when it comes to quartz staining and dull marks, resin is very soft material and it reacts with any household product like lemon juice, vinegar, wine, soap, tomato juice etc. and when you spill nay kind of acidic/alkaline on quartz it creates etch mark, which looks like stain but it is a chemical reaction with resin, which you cannot get out unless you re-polish surface by professional guy. Even regular use abrasive object like magic eraser, or scotchbrite will create a dull mark when you rub quartz countertop with it for cleaning, it is cutting though soft resin and destroying fine finish. Quartz need to be treated like a baby, it is good for display in galley but not for daily use in kitchen. Egypt pyramid has granite which has withstand 3000-4000 year of abuse but todays quartz cannot withstand normal use and tear of daily kitchen activity. I made mistake of installing quartz, but I will never go back to quartz natural stone/granite is best option for me.

"I think they applied the sealer incorrectly." It may have not needed sealer at all. If the stone is too dense to absorb the sealant - as most black granites are - the sealant sits on top of the stone, forming a haze. This is particularly noticeable if a dish or something is pulled across the counter, streaking the sealant. There are many granites that do not ever need to be sealed because they are too dense, but unfortunately, many fabricators apply sealant habitually, whether the granite needs it or not. The sealant can be removed with acetone. If you have some nail polish remover in the house, you can try that, since nail polish remover is acetone. Otherwise you can get acetone at Home Depot or hardware stores. A little goes a long way. It would be best to test an inconspicuous spot with the acetone, and wipe off, and see what happens. I say inconspicuos spot because there are some black granites being sold that have been dyed to be more black than they originally were. If that is the case with yours, then the acetone will take off the hazy sealant but also some of the black dye, so test in an inconspicuous spot.
