My mantel looks naked and .........apparently should be.

last modified: 2 months ago

I don't want clutter on my mantel only to fill an empty space. However, I am open to recommendations that will complement the artwork, mantel, and fireplace. Please share your ideas. The fireplace is at more of an angle than the pano reflects. I'm not sure why the walls look so yellow in the photos, but they are actually a light beige. Measurements: 88"W x 8"DThe artwork is extremely heavy and large. As such, framing it is cost prohibitive and not a solution I can consider.

***Update:

PLEASE have a look at the photographs I gave contributor, deegw, which show the room's overall size and other characteristics. I've already tossed out part of my furniture from when I moved in last year. With the green cabinets gone, I even pared down the items I displayed in them. Removing the mirror is a simple decision because I've previously considered it. However, this only leaves another empty place. So, I have a wall to the left of the fireplace and a narrow wall to the right to decorate.

To use your literal comments, what can I do to bring "balance", be "proportional", look "light and airy", and isn’t "cluttery"?

From the "bottom of the barrel barrel of all designers.....": )

I would look at Taylor King, I would look @Hancock and Moore. I much will depend your budget. Also Lazy Boy....albeit more limited selection.

Those are just some of those I'd consider,

Why? It is completely possible to have a very COMFORTABLE piece o

furniture, without a resort to lumpy or lots of bulk

Taylor king will have a smooth back, not a tight back

    https://www.taylorking.com/furniture/category/reclining-sofas-chairs/?page=all

    Hancock and Moore:

    https://www.hancockandmoore.com/Products/Search?TypeID=CAT15&Page=2

All will be mostly shown in leather as that is generally the preferred - but you can choose a fabric from their selection, or provide your own ( com ). Lots in a smooth attached back cushion, but none in either with a true tight back and also a rolled arm.

Perhaps you meant attached back? Virtually all will be attached back, whether fabric or leather.

Lazy Boy may end up being your best option, as their locations abound USA. A test drive these days is quite difficult, given so few independent brick and mortar left, outside of the catalogue folks.

Taylor King or Hancock would require a brick and mortar venue, or an interior designer.

Share what you think...There would be a black bookcase on each side of the trunk. I'd place the TV on the wall, vertically centered between the top of the trunk and the top of the bookcases. I purchased a black lift-top coffee table similar to the one I already have, but it would match the color of the bookcases. Before I purchase the bookcases I would like your input. For right now, just focus on the bookcases and tell me what you think about their style and how they would look on my big wall.

Roundup wouldn't have any effect on the insect populations. Also, there wouldn't be any residual in the straw. We have done multiple university result demonstrations with roundup, it doesn't affect plants like that and it certainly wouldn't affect insects. You can literally spray an insect with roundup and it will have no affect. I would suspect the cold weather zapped them when they were out looking for food. It may not have even necessarily been the cold, but if they were exposed when the cold hit and then rapidly warmed up, they could have just been gotten by the temperature change if it was rapid enough. Also, you said it has been rainy? Rainy and cold would largely negate the advantage of straw trapping heat if it was a good enough rain. Hope your insects come back in the spring, I am certain they will, but your description doesn't sound like pesticide poisoning to me. Especially since you appear to be finding them dead widespread. That is a good indicator of a weather/environmental affect as opposed to pesticide.

How wide should my linear fireplace be?

    Q

    Comments (1)
I'm putting a 36" linear in a wall that is 73", window to window. Most importantly because the existing gas fireplace is 36" and I don't want to pay to have all of that rebuilt. The current surround, builder special of wood sides and mantel and a bit of marble around the fireplace opening, is 60". We're flexible on the new surround - again wood with marble but at least it will be something that looks like it was designed in this century - but am sticking with the current dimensions or a smidge wider so no major drywall repair or painting has to happen to the large 2-story wall. This project will start...soon. Down payment made in February, along with full payment for fireplace which I don't think has yet arrived so I guess the sliver lining is that I haven't had a gaping hole in my wall during all of this stay at home and contractor not working. A 36" linear is also exponentially less expensive than anything larger, but if you're rebuilding the whole box I guess you can choose what you want. This is the 36" model we're getting. Someday. That ^^^ stone wall is wider than 66" and wider than my planned 60" space, so the fireplace will not look as "small" as it does here. Don't forget that your linear fireplace will be higher off the floor; I think mine requires installation at least 8" above the floor/hearth. I don't understand the rest of your question; not sure how stairs and fireplace location work. But stone on stairs I assume requires some extra support?

What depth should my drywall/sheetrock be?

    Q

    Comments (11)
It does look like plaster over rock lath; however, I have rock lath in my house and the total thickness is closer to an inch. When was the house built? If you want to use a drywall patch panel, then trace and cut out a ceiling square that ends midway on a joist on both sides so you have enough "meat" to drive in the new screws. Cut the drywall patch the same size (it looks like 5/8" thick is what you need) , fit it into the hole and screw it to the joists on each side. Then tape all the joints and finish with drywall compound. Since you apparently have access to the attic above you could also add blocking above to the other two sides, but it isn't really necessary Buy a drywall finishing sanding blocks that is about 8-10" wide, or a rigid holder and sandpaper sheets is even better. The rigid holder allows you to keep a level surface across 8-10" and you will get a more even finish. When you use a small sanding block, especially the flexible ones, its very easy to dig in on one side and end up with an uneven surface. Wide, flat and inflexible works better for sanding drywall seams. This is one example. https://www.homedepot.com/p/ANVIL-3-1-4-in-x-9-1-4-in-Aluminum-Hand-Sander-with-Wooden-Handle-82602/308729719?MERCH=REC--pipsem--202187725--308729719--N Bruce .

    Three ways........... as you asked.....

Feels heavy below?Yes, it's all exactly on your taped areas

With one bookcase - meh? just sort of unrelated items on a wall? Feel like going back to the beginning .

Three matched low bookcases, a larger tv : )

and the naked window is making me crazy : ) call it better yet below

You must do what you like. I'm not sure you can ever let go of the trunk, but? Continuing to cling to it seems not to help . I think if you want a lovely wall? It just needs to have a more cohesive intentional look, or becomes clutter in competition with a busy fire surround.

JMO......but the best look is here, same widths, any color/stain and it doesn't need to be black, and it need not match a storage coffee table.

Rutabaga - I see you are a glutton for punishment. ;)

I have already wasted a ton of my time here on your post... so, I figured - why not waste some more?

Look - the only thing you are going to continue to get from certain people here is bull$___ about your trunk.

I gave you an idea and I don’t see why you just don’t do it.

As an alternative - and as was suggested way up thread - I think it was deegw who made the suggestion... For a longer console, you can just flank your trunk with two well proportioned end tables. You keep your trunk tv console, you get the added length - plus, it is infinitely more creative and interesting, than just acquiring a long console, from any store USA, just to have a long console. Even one interesting table might be enough.

    ETA: Or low bookcases.

    rutabaga4 thanked freedomplace1

As far as the two tall bookcases flanking the trunk - imo, it’s too much. Too heavy and potentially too cluttered. And the trunk just gets lost in the mix.

"the only thing you are going to continue to get from certain people here is bull$___ about your trunk."

An educated opinion is not B.S

Some things work really well. Some do not work very well, but you want it badly and you do as you like and want, and be happy. If you aren't certain you will be happy, you ask, receive opinion, but the decision is still the domain of whomever asked. We all see differently.

The fire is a busy and imposing element in the space. The adjacent

tv wall needs to "stand up to the fire" provide a balance, yet not provide too much competition. The op wants display of treasures considered as well, and everyone knows and understands the sentimental aspect of the trunk.

So..........only the op can decide and weigh all the elements and advice and decide what she wants, based on the input.

The B.S is to argue otherwise.

Your words are a great summation of what I am trying to do in this post. So, in this example, I am still asking, and want to post (possible) progress, based on at least one similar suggestion that several contributors have even included pictures as reference. I shared the picture of the black bookcase and marked the exact measurements on the floor and wall of the one that I found. To try out a suggesting that several contributors shared, They are:

    · Black

    · almost 84” tall (very difficult to find anything taller, like 90”

    · in relation to the depth of the trunk, it is the closest in depth than many of the others I have looked at.

Now that I have marked the size of the bookshelves on the wall, I think it would be too much. So I’ve decided not to buy them, and I am thankful I marked the size with painters tape so I won’t have to start another thread like one titled ..." I got this, did this and I HATE IT! HELP ME, what should I do?" ..........

I met with a designer, that came to my home. We discussed a lot of the ideas that have been suggested on here. But there were also little things, like pointing out the flat horizontal base of the trunk. She suggested that anything next to it with a flat horizontal base would add to the continuity. Therefore something like a highboy would not be the best decision. I never thought to even look at what horizontal lines across the floor might look like. Once again, new eyes, new insight.

@Home Interiors with Ease, you wrote “As I look more at that trunk I think it is the color more than size that is not working… it is like a red mahogony color..does not work well with the floors or fireplace..none of the wood stains are cohesive….maybe lets look at it in another way…would you consider giving it a black wash or black wax to deepen the color to almost black..very easy to do.”

I want to tip my hat to HIWE for opening my eyes to the multiple wood tones going on in the room. Rather than alter the trunk, my designer suggested if I add any furniture to go with/next to the trunk that it would be easiest to go with black because it would not be competing with the lighter hardwood floor, browns in the trunk, and the variegated colors in the fireplace. I bring this up because both you and she offered two possible suggestions for an issue (wood tone colors) that I hadn’t considered in my planning. And for this very reason I am grateful for threads like this because it makes me aware and gets me thinking about other things to consider as I pull together a plan.

This other photo is only a reference. I wanted to show the size of the bookcases I was considering, in comparison to the ladder and mirror I have there now. I will 100% be getting rid of the mirror. It won’t even go in the basement for later use. I made a bad purchase and will sell it on Facebook or Nextdoor. As a piece of furniture, I still think the ladder is pretty. It is solid, heavy and not made of plywood, so it has a finish that I like. And the color doesn’t conflict with the color of the trunk. But, thanks to so many of you, I am not 100% convinced that it is in the right spot. It will most likely go in the basement and I will just hold on to it (at least for now). I don’t think the height of the bookcases is necessarily a problem. However, with their width, height, and depth combined, I feel they look crammed against the wall, and it just makes me uncomfortable as I sit in this space typing to all of you.

Do TWO low bookcases at same height as trunk, mahogany or similar. whatever a custom wood worker can create.

You can do same depth....build a false back in it if you like, OR step them back from the depth of the trunk. Match the is the word or you will keep going in circles on this topic and the wall.

If you HAVE a designer? She should have a craftsman.: )

The ONLY way to really make this wall REALLY work? Abandon the trunk. do something like this in any deep wood stain. everything else feels a bit forced.

I'm glad you decided against the two bookcases. To me it looked like it might be a little heavy for that wall. You had mentioned you had a hutch for the dining room. If you use that, could you use the ladder between the windows instead of the bookcase? Hard to say without knowing what the hutch looks like.

Did the designer have any specific suggestions for the sides of the trunk?

I want to be clear that you all know how valuable your input is to me. I absolutely understand and agree that proportion, balance, and continuity are vital for tying a place together. I believe we can all agree that the corner fireplace and high ceilings make this a challenging area to determine what is actually BEST! But, while the ideas are inspiring, I don't know what to concentrate on. Some options provide techniques that keep the eye moving horizontally across the wall under the mantel. Others propose extremely tall options, such as bookcases that rise above the mantel. Sometimes these two opposing suggestions come from the same person! I can say with confidence that I do NOT like the idea of two bookcases that are the size of the ones in my most recent pics. Some suggestions leave the space above the TV even more out of proportion with the angled ceiling because it just seems to emphasize the emptiness of the wall. I think I have so many wonderful ideas to consider. But truly, I need to know what is best, regardless of whether you like the trunk or not ;-) , what is the best visual approach? Vertical in a step by step arrangement, above or below the height of the mantel, or horizontal? It doesn't seem possible to choose one that meets all the criteria. My brain is in a whirlwind. So I am going to pause and fix dinner.

You need to get with your DESIGNER. You really can not keep crowd sourcing, you will go nowhere but a circle.

Why? Because you WANT the trunk on that wall. There is a give and get to every decision you make. It isn't unlike dominoes.

You have seen every possibility imaginable to use the trunk. The tv at virtually identical width and height, overwhelms the trunk.

Adding odds and end pieces for display mirror, trees, ladders? Ends up feeling like " Stuff on a wall, no real story" - you've got visuals up this thread that show it!.

So..........you either keep the trunk, and KNOW it will be a bit disjointed, but it will be YOUR personal "perfect" to love................or you free yourself from it - not to give away, but to pass on to family.

When you lower!!!! the entire composition? Your focus comes off the high and odd angles of ceiling. The other corrector for that, and balance? window treatments!!!

    Get with the designer....again.

It is a tv.....and you can only look at so much at one time. As it applies to this wall ? You will soon be at overthink. Make a ROOM. : ) Sum of all parts.

  • last month

@JAN MOYER Your suggestion is lovely with the sconces on either side of the TV. Even if I was able to get two side tables that were the same height and same color as the trunk, the size of the TV would have to be ENORMOUS! Notice you have the height above the mantel. Even If I got rid of the trunk, and built "low bookcases" our current TV would be floating so high it would look out of proportion. I'm not going to buy a bigger TV. I have to draw the financial line somewhere. :-)

It's a combination of warm tones, texture, a blend of colors carried from elsewhere in the house, In the middle of all? A VERY large cherry kitchen....not changing.

You need not create the "furniture showroom" effect. But you do need to decide what must stay." You included that their mohair chair and the couch were items that were not to be replaced.

Why is my ONE item that I've decided must stay, such a thorn in everyone's side, particularly yours???? The designer that has seen my home, videotaped it, taken pictures, gotten the measurements, understands that I'm willing to let go of the mirror and possibly replace the ladder, but I want to keep the trunk. That I need a rug and new seating. Her response that I want to keep the trunk? I understand it's special, let's see how we can have it look great on that wall! What did you say to the woman who put her foot down and said I'm not parting with my chair and couch? Keep the trunk. Do what Freedom Place suggested, with tables, potted plants, or what not of roughly the same height on one or both sides. True. Because 90% of deign is usually just that. An imperfect something or other, and the best way or ways.....to minimize a flaw and maximize a result.

Your designer gets paid to see in advance, that which you may not see. ( another set of experienced eyes ) An honest designer tries very hard to say "yes" a lot more often than "No".
