LEAST favorite daylily
Comments (32)Well, it is a strange business, this daylily growing. Spiny Sea Urchin bloomed for me this year and it's perfect. (No blotches and the second flower today has a few teeth!) Gentle Shepard? Bloomed slow the first year, planted right up against a big boxwood, but doubled it's fans and blooming perfect blooms like mad. I was just looking at it yesterday thinking "The winner! And still CHAMPION! Geeeeeeeentle SHEPARRRRRD!!!" I was tired of Stella lining my driveway. Way, way, way past time to divide, too. Last year I nearly fainted doing the six by my front walk. A guy at Lowes was moaning over some puny pencil fans for 3.84 and yet still distressed because the marker was gone from two and they only 'thought' they were Stella. He wanted five. I listened for five minutes while I waited to check out, and then I cocked my head and invited him home. He hesitated only a moment, while I gave my name, address, and daylily status (over a hundred cultivars, with a nine year old row of thirty Stella surrounding my house like a moat.) He hopped in his truck and followed me the five minutes home, whipped out his trusty fork and dug a clump of Stella with great enthusiasm. Wide eyed with gratitude, he spilled out his story of mismatched yellows on a landscape job and how mad the people were, but how he could spade the clump into fifths and they'd never miss a beat, and match the other clumps for size. I said "Please come back and dig another clump anytime. Please. Please?"...See MoreA Very Water-Marked Day
Comments (16)Sorry for the delay in responding -- we lost power for the third time this summer and just got back on-line. Robert Lee Batt is a good, dependable grower. It's not as floriferous as other Hansons I grow, but the blooms are rarely splotchy or malformed. I do have a weakness for any watermarked daylily, which is why so many Munsons still live here. For those of you considering South Sea Serenade, please don't base your decision on my ill luck. The area in which it's planted isn't the best (although I still would have expected a bloom or two in the last few years). It sounds like it does well for others, so I may need to move it....See MoreMy favorite daylily opened today
Comments (14)For signet_gw: Scape height is between 28" & 30"; bud count is 8-9 buds per scape with 5 of 7 having 8 and 2 of 7 having 9. My best estimate is that this is the beginning of mid-season for me. Ploidy is a mystery. I posted two photos below - can someone tell me how many branches they see?...See MoreFavorite Daylilies with (Purposeful) Spots and Streaks
Comments (24)Ok , I think all the excitement here at my home has slowed down so now I can concentrate on commenting on people images. Debra , oh my I really like Reckless Girls . I haven't had time to look it up but the name sounds like it is a Judy Davisson cultivar. What a gorgeous plant ! I concur with the rest of the folks here Many thanks for coordinating these posts. Unfortunately I had some issues here at home that kept me from commenting on some posts but rest assured the images of the blooms were very much appreciated Karen , wow your seedling has it all it seems. Stippling , it's a bitone , has ruffles and a contrasting mid rib . Lucky YOU!!! Nancy 6b, your NOID sure looks like Little Grapette. Of course that is only a guess as I have no details on stats and whether a dip or a tet. Brad love the corregation on your seedling . Couple that with the white edge it is striking . Is it very tall ? Hoosier_nan ., Love your image of Explosion in the Paint Factory . Now that is one I would love to add here. Soul Sister is intense. :Looks like it could hold its own against Celeste's purples . Love the greyed purple ! MaryL . Love your sense of humour " we can't post blotchiness " Ha ha ha ha ah! I have a few of those myself ! Woodnative . Love your image of Explosion in the Paint Factory too ! Celeste Spacecoast Dream Catcher is very very pretty . And wow look at all the buds ! Spots or no spots that one sure is a keeper! Love Jerry Hyatt . . I grow it here too but it only shows patterns in its petals some of the time . Again another intense purple .
