Endless Summer Hydrangea performance

I've had an Endless Summer hydrangea since they were introduced 10-20 years ago. It is a very unreliable bloomer, and no I don't cut back the old wood. Occasionally I have a summer where it blooms nicely, some summers I may get 1 or 2 blooms, but most summers it doesn't bloom at all. The only reason I haven't pulled it out is because it at least has a nice shape and foliage, so until I get other problem areas in my landscape taken care of, it will stay.

This was a no-bloom summer. But about mid-September I noticed three very small buds. Now--mid October--those three small buds are blooming. What is going on? And does anyone have suggestions on getting a better performance overall?

Hydrangeas that belong to the Endless Summer Collection will typically have two flushes of blooms; that includes: The Original, Bloomstruck, Blushing Bride, Twist N' Shout, Pop Star, Summer Crush. The first flush of blooms occurs from the old wood and, for you, it seems to occur around June based on your comments. The second flush of blooms occurs when the brand new stems that started growing in spring 2024 attain sufficient height in 2024 to trigger flower bud set and immediate blooming. That usually happens in late summer or fall.

If your variety is one of the six listed, it sounds as if the old wood was pruned too early (leafless stems should be pruned by the end of June or even in July if near Canada), the shrub was fed too late last year (early frosts might kill the flower buds if the shrub us still in active growth mode) or perhaps late frosts killed the old wood. The mid-September blooms were from the second flush of blooms. This year, it took until then to get the new stems to grow tall enough to develop those blooms. Shorter varieties like Pop Star and Summer Crush will bloom earlier than the other four which are taller as it will take less time to reach flower bud set height.

If your variety is not listed, your shrub is not an Endless Summer Hydrangea. It may bloom only once a year (it may also have occasional blooms in the fall when the weather tricks the spring 2025 blooms into opening in the fall 2024). It could also be a rebloomer variety not part of the ES Collection but you will need to find the name in the plant label to confirm that.

The newer Pop Star (lacecap blooms) and Summer Crush (mophead blooms) varieties get about 3 feet high only and will produce a second flush earlier than the original Endless Summer Hydrangea as the Original variety can get about 5-6 feet high.

If the old wood is bloom unreliable in your location, ensure your last fertilizer application occurs 3 months before your average date of first frost and consider winter protecting from your city's average date of first frost through your average date of last frost.

From my experience, the new Endless Summer varieties Bloomstruck and Twist N' Shout flower more reliably than the Original. The breeding is newer and the performance is much improved. I would suggest replacing it with a newer Endless Summer variety or one of the newer Let's Dance series such as LD Sky View, LD Arriba, or LD Can Do. The breeding has improved so much in the 30 years since ES was introduced.

Just enjoying my morning coffee and it has finally stopped raining and the sun is out, here in Barrie. Some good morning reading here I find our Canadian Tire stores locally do not carry as much selection of plants as they used to They did use to have lots of those little potted perenial plants and then mark them down even 75% off But this year and last there are not really any interesting perenicals in the smaller pots I think you are quite correct about the plant department of Canadian Tire That mostly the staff taking care of it do not know much about plants and that having a garden centre for them is really not a money maker, at least not the plants but just something that all the stores have. Maybe in some stores there is better care, but I expect plants themselves are not that much of a money maker for Canadian Tire.

Hi, I just wanted to add to the ESummer discussion. I am surprised about dissatisfaction with the color etc. I love the mophead hydrangeas and not having been able to keep one flowering in my yard before was a great disappointment to me. So I was delighted with the Endless Summer I had last year. It bloomed a lot and my blue flowers were a fine color blue to me, in an unamended clay/loam soil with a ph of 6.4. It was a vigorous grower and the leaves were healthy all summer. It was placed in morning sun only just under the dripline of a silver maple tree. No wilt despite two months of barely any rain but supplemental watering and lots of heat last summer. I added an oakleaf hydrangea to the yard last year, and it died back to the ground over the winter and I have one little sprout just barely up. The ES on the other hand has a bushy 8" growth covered with healthy green leaves. So if the ESummer blooms again and stays healthy for me, I will be very grateful to have a dependable mophead in the garden with pretty blue flowers. I will try to remember to come back to this thread later when the plant blooms and post a photo of it. :-)

"not enough hours" I understand. It is tiring. My back is killing me today for working on the yard. Trying to weed and pull a trumpet vine whose roots refuse to die and have reached all the way to the Planet Jupiter. 25 years trying to kill it!!! Oh, my back, ouch! I am NJ too. I have two Nikko Blue hydrangeas that are 4' x 4', but barely bloom each year (might get 4 or 5 blooms) and a 2 yr old ES that bloomed pretty well this year (better than year 1) but hasn't rebloomed yet (if it's going to). The worst part about them is that they look pretty sad and droopy in the NJ heat and humidity during the day, so without the blooms they are pretty ugly. I did plant my first serrata (Tuff Stuff) last fall, but that hasn't had a single bloom this year. It's growing, so seems to be doing ok otherwise, but it's been extremely disappointing. I might give up on all Hydrangeas :P Oh and about the rooting...I took a cutting from the serrata in May and it rooted easily in a few weeks (and I'm no propagation expert...just stuck it in some peat moss and put a zip lock baggie over it). I was bold and even planted it in the ground towards the end of June and it's doing great, so now I have 2 non-blooming serratas :P
