Who else has been bitten by the Gardening Bug early?
Comments (13)Got both woodstove going full tilt this morning and I hope to do at least a couple of winter sowing containers but I'll be putting them in our 5C beasement until the temps warm-up outside. From 18C inside the house to -20C outside is too much of a hit for even a sleepy seed eh? I brought in some Asclepias Curassavicas from my gardens in the fall. Six small plants in total. Just wanted to see if I could overwinter them in the house. Until about 2 weeks ago they were in our cool basement, but then I decided to bring them upstairs and place them on a windowsill after repotting in good new soil. One of them, the most mature, is bursting out with new leaves from the old stem, but the others are all just staying put. They were all smaller plants. Our season isn't hot enough for them to flower from seed the first year, so thought I'd try it. I have no houseplants so it's nice to have something inside the house. :O)...See Morespring bulb orders question
Comments (9)Thanks everyone, I got allium Gladiators, 50% off. Usually these giants cost $5 per bulb. I've seen that come down to $5 for 2 bulbs and now with the sales, I got them at $2.50 for 2 bulbs. I purchased several packages of course. Oh, pests don't like allium bulbs which is why I love these things. My techniques for discouraging pests from attacking my tulips is simply to add a few daffodil bulbs on the highest layer of bulbs. Pests hate biting into these bitter bulbs. I practise layering all my tulip bulbs (early, mid and late bloomers) in one hole so that area experiences continues blooms until June....See MoreHow Many Spring Bulbs Have You Ordered?
Comments (6)I think everyone on this site is out of control. I know I am. I think I have about 300 bulbs on order (I have lost count of the exact number). I also ordered fifteen new roses for spring delivery this morning. I have no idea where I am going to plant all these things, they just looked so pretty in the catalogs and they really weren't too expensive. I am fairly tight on room in my gardens as it is. Oops. I try to explain to my husband that a plant addiction is much cheaper than a drug habit but I am probably going to require professional intervention....See More? for Carol (or anyone else who has canned cornichons)
Comments (12)OK, I found it. As I said, I made these years and years ago, so can't vouch for the results (tastes change). As I remember, though, they were pretty much what you would expect of these sour little devils. All I have is a little clipping of this recipe, which IIRC, came from an old Oregon Extension service newsletter. They often offered canning recipes that were "outside the norm" for the 70's. This document gives processing time as 7 minutes, but frankly with 100% vinegar and those tiny little true cornichons, I'd personally feel comfortable with 5 minutes. But that's my take on it, nothing official. Jars sterilized, of course. Here it is: Cornichons (small pickled cucumbers) Wash 50 cucumbers (1 1/2 - 2 inches maximum) or 1 1/2 quarts. Brush or rub to remove the tiny spines, being careful not to break the delicate skins. Cut off blossom ends. Place in bowl and mix lightly with 1/4 cup coarse salt and 12 peeled tiny onions. Cover and let stand overnight. Drain the next day and pack with onions into 3 hot, clean pint jars. Add 3 to 4 sprigs of fresh tarragon, 4 to 5 whole black peppers and a small bay leaf to each jar. Heat about 2 cups white wine vinegar to boiling. Fill each to within 1/4 inch of top. Seal and process in hot water bath for 7 minutes. Carol...See MoreRelated Professionals
