Veggie Tales - October 2017
Comments (182)Itsmce - I don't think you have to worry about the cabbage worms going forward. I haven't seen any of the moths for a couple weeks up here and I would imagine the hard freeze would have killed any that had already hatched out. As Chris mentioned, the carrots should continue to sweeten up as well as size up the longer they are exposed to cool temps. I'm going to wait until at least Thanksgiving week to harvest mine and may leave some of them until December as long as it doesn't get cold enough for the ground to freeze solid. I've still got a lot of garden cleanup to do. I still have 26 broccoli plants that are slowly putting out more side shoots. I'll probably leave them be until I get around to starting my new compost piles and then chop them up to mix with the fall leaves. Chris - Yes, I'm still planning to build the 3 new beds. I need somewhere to put the soil from the beds that I am ripping out. Besides, I have a $100 Home Depot gift card burning a hole in my wallet I need to use. That's great that your friend is going to let you use his garden next year. More food! Naturegirl - Yep I am going to make my goal. The potatoes didn't put me over the top but they sure helped get me close. I didn't know my garden had fans rooting for it...thanks!!! I don't know what I should set my goal at next year especially if I use my friends garden too. Maybe 1250 lbs. would be reasonable. Did your bunching onions multiply this fall? I overwintered them one year and then separated them the following spring and they did well but I think I prefer just planting new seedlings in the spring. It sounds like you really got dumped on this week and now it looks like snow is coming down over most of Michigan. There is some snow in western KS heading our way as I type but it is supposed to turn into a cold rain before it gets here tonight. Perfect for the little Trick-or-Treaters :-(....See MoreVeggie Tales - October 2020
Comments (228)LOL Margi if you figure out what is brown and green let me know! Dahlias I have down as green because they are full of water and nitrogen. But maybe not if they get a chance to dry out and become mostly carbon. I think the most important thing is to keep changing what goes in as the pile grows. I just turned a pile that went cold after 6 weeks and it seemed mostly brown and dry so added layers of dahlias and other green stuff and some water as I rebuilt it and now it is heating up again. I don't have any deciduous trees so took lawn mower and trailer to a parking lot in town surrounded by oak trees. This must be their year to shed leaves because it was easy to mow up batches and came home with about a yard of mulch....See MoreVeggie Tales >>> March 2024
Comments (63)Got pepper seedlings pricked and repotted. Just pepperonchini, I need to do a round of canning this year. A dozen pots, hopefully I'll be busy later this summer. Lots of flower seed started, some herb seed. Daffs are up and yellow all over the place. Haven't opened any of the caps in over a week. Been busy at work and then we got some of that cold snowy crappy. Only a scant inch. It's supposed to warm up more this week so I'll start peeking then. Rain is coming in and I need to open the garden caps to make sure everything is good and wet out there. I need to do some cleaning out on the porch. Wormwood cuttings I took too late last year and didn't really take need to be sorted out from the lots that are doing well. Why can't they do that neatly so I don't have to sort the pots out, lol. Some of my flower seedlings are getting big enough that I need to start their sheltered hardening off with the cooler temps and night hours out in the porch. So cleaning I must do. Been sorting out the gardening supply stock. I've got plenty of dried toothache blossoms on hand and some hot peppers to use up... so once it's sunny I'll put out some jars of tea for spraying the new tree planting out back. The combo of hot from the peppers and numbing from the toothache plant can be disturbing to critters that want to nibble. Running low on sugar ferments so I'll have to make more this year....See MoreVeggie Steps 2024
Comments (9)The bed I planted a few weeks back is doing okay. Peas and radishes look good, sort of spotty germination of a couple different types of bok choy and turnips, A small bed of beets also has spotty germination but I sowed them sort of thick so should be okay. I moved all 3 cold frames to new locations. One has tomatoes, another cucumbers and the other a variety of melons. So far so good. It's a big jump on getting warm season plants in the ground. In one of the newer areas I transplanted in a few types of kale, thyme and rhubarb I started from seed. Lots of volunteer lettuce, radish and red orach all over the place. A small bed I reclaimed from dutch clover recently and planted carrots has lots of things germinating (clover?) but no carrots seen yet. I may change direction of that small area and transplant something in then find a new area for carrots. Lots of stuff under the grow lights yet. Unfortunately I had the tomatoes too close to the high intensity bulbs. They almost died before I realized my mistake. Recovery looks ok however I might get some new starts if recovery doesn't veer towards looking good....See MoreRelated Professionals
