A surface mounted light fixture at the center of the ceiling will light the back of someone working in the kitchen and throw a shadow on the work surface. This is how the kitchen would have been illuminated in the 30's. We now know that for better comfort and efficiency such task areas should be illuminated more directly with stronger focused light from under the cabinets or recessed into the ceiling. Modern recessed light fixtures can be 3" or 4" in diameter and deeply recessed or with shields so the lamp is not noticeable. They should be placed about at the line of the front edge of the counter and be adjustable or wall washers. They are particularly effective over the sink. If you have an island, pendant lights are decorative and efficient but for a low ceiling, recessed Low-Voltage Pin-Spot fixtures work very well. A major decision will be if you want a ceiling fan.

softpunk that's for you to decide..the size seems right the style seems right and it will work with the sconces..but my opinion is not to buy if you feel you settle..and yes to buy if it touches you in a special way as for the money..changing three countries, with some back and forth in the middle, taught me to try not to convert the currency..as absurd as it sounds)) like, convert it of course, and it does come automatically in the beginning, but then you plainly stop doing that. it's rarely a pleasant surprise..unless you go to Nicaragua..))

Mom of three.... You posted seven chandeliers. Do you have interlocking oval glass kitchen cabinet details or something else to consider and replicate? If not, then the capiz shell wins IMO. It appears delicate and airy, and the design pattern does not fight with the classic airy backed chairs. -The beaded light wood chandeliers compete with the dark wood chairs. Do you have a light colored wood buffet in the room? -The crystal chandelier looks very heavy in comaprison to the airy thin railed chair backs. -The bubble drum is interesting. If you love it, then get it. I don't care for it as it reads to me like happiness (bubbles) constrained (severe shade covering it)

Oakley, i have thought long and hard about getting rid of the fan, which has no lights but am ready. I rarely use it. The one in my bedroom has run every night on high for 21 years.
